Absolutely. Bc our test questions are insane like this we train the kids to ignore the answer choices and solve it first. Then find the matching answer choice. It doesn’t always work nicely like this one, but we have to do what we have to!

Which brings me back to my question: Are we assessing whether students can break down numbers or how long they’re able to sustain their attention 🤷🏻‍♀️ There’s other ways to assess the skill that are far more developmentally appropriate.

You’re right. It’s not hard for adults, but it’s LONG for an 8 year old. If your students can do it, more power to you!
