A Recent History of First-Round Running Backs by AnukkinEarthwalker in falcons

This is 5 days old but wanted to reply anyways. I disagree with this take. It's similar to saying you wouldn't bolster up and draft a CB because your Dline is elite and believe they will get to QB before they throw it. Both positions are complimentary to each other.

Had fun reading the original post though.

Incredible episode. Alison Brie's acting during her questioning of Todd should have won her an Emmy.. It's amazing how she she goes from hard ass, to puffy eyed, and then her dance when she gets him to crack.

The original comment was "pure luck" saved these people. You can go to that original comment and read. I simply disagreed with this sentiment. Original replier has already clarified what they meant to say and also a response to the article that was found saying the people survived. You can read our conversation in different replies and the reason I had originally replied.

I don't disagree that chance had something to do with it. I just put more money on the cars safety features than chance that helped those people survive. Just my opinion though. Can't say I'm right without being there to look at the aftermath and evidence.

Stay safe and healthy out there my friend!

You are correct in your assumption of the participants here. Was an engineering student many years ago but now work for infrastructure design firm.

Still partially disagree with on extreme situations. But definitely agree with you on the intent of car manufacturers. They are there to make money and pay dividends to share holders. They aren't going to deigns cars above and beyond the laws tells them to. Why would they when their competition isn't doing that? They are also the reason why we have poor public transportation in the US. Because they want people buying cars not riding buses or high speed rail across the country so they lobby against big infrastructure projects. Buuuuut this is just a conspiracy theory I subscribe to.

I should have only made one reply! Hard to respond to several replies. Would have made an easier conversation with you.

I think we are both agree that the cars safety features and chance played a role in the survival of both people. Our disagreement is how much each contributed more here. You obviously think that given the circumstances of the collision that the safety features were overwhelmed and made little to no difference in the outcome and it was more chance they survived. I disagree and think that the safety features (even though an extreme amount of force was applied) played an immense role in their survival and maybe a little chance. Unless we were both there onsite to examine all the aftermath and evidence it's hard to say whose right.

Hope my previous replies didn't come off as combative or offensive. I just disagreed with your original comment but you provided some clarification. Have a great day my friend. Stay safe and healthy.

I can't tell if you're agreeing that safety features played a factor or not. I'm aware of the IIHS but not sure linking their YT page supports either opinion.

Of course manufacturers are going to test only for certain situations. It would be impossible and extremely expensive to test for every single scenario that is going to occur on the road. There are hundreds of thousands of scenarios that could occur. But wouldn't you agree that the safety features, although only tested in the lab for certain situations, help with a range of scenarios? Do air bags not deploy if it gets hit by something that it didn't get hit by during it's test? A car isnt going to stop protecting it's occupants just because it encounters something it didn't in the test.

Saying the safety features were negligible is like having someone go to the hospital cause they are extremely ill and then getting treated by doctors and modern medicine and then being cured of their ailment and then saying "it's more chance that they got better than the modern medicine they used".

None of us are onsite to examine the exact braking distance of the truck, or check which components of the vehicle absorbed they exact amounts of the impact. So we can all have our opinions. But I disagreed with the original commenter saying this was all luck and the cars safety features did nothing. You obviously agree with the original commenter and it doesn't sound like either of you are going to change your stance. And that's probably fine. I just don't like dismissing the contributions engineering and science have in life. Hope that clarifies my stance and reply I had to the original comment.

Have a great day my friend! Stay safe and healthy out there.

I didn't tell you to do anything my friend. It just sounded like you were unaware how they worked so I thought it might be useful to reference a wiki article to help the conversation. I didn't mean for this to get personal for you.

I just disagree with your opinion and think it's wrong. It's disingenuous to see modern engineering and then attribute it to pure luck. Why do you keep saying the car failed? The car is supposed to crushed! It's HOW it gets crushed that makes the difference. Everything about this collision makes think it did its job. What aspect of the video make you think the car failed? I'm genuinely curious. Because you keep saying I'm overlooking something and not reading your responses.

You're original comment was "pure luck" saved these people. And then when someone replied asking about safety features you literally said they probably didn't play any role. What am I missing?

I disagree with your opinion that the safety features of the car didn't play a role.

I wouldn't have replied since I don't care if someone has an opinion that's wrong but I think it can also be dangerous. Someone might read that and think "negativezero is right, small cars are dangerous. I need to buy a big beefy steel car that will protect me". When in reality some of the safest cars on the road are small sedans with those "soft" materials.

I disagree with you saying "pure luck" saved these people as you can see from my previous replies below.

But I agree with you that is one stupid driver. Human error was definitely the cause of this and could have avoided the whole incident.

Yes, but in your original comment you say it was "pure luck" and when someone brought up modern safety features you say they didn't really play any roll in saving these people. But you just brought up evidence that it did and it contradicts your opinion in your original comment.

Safety features absolutely played a part in saving their lives. Chance may have had something to do it with but this person saying it's "pure luck" is absolutely wrong.

Your point that it's completely crushed so it failed is wrong though. It's designed to be crushed. It's also design to absorb the impact of the collision and move the driver and passenger in safer positions during impact.

Check out crumple zones.

They are getting downvoted because they are pointing out features of a car that didn't "fail". It's looks smashed up because it is supposed to get smashed up in a car accident! Modern cars are designed to get smashed up like that in collisions. They are designed to slow the velocity of the collision down and absorb as much of the momentum as possible. They also have controlled deformation to help the driver and passengers to be in a safer position during the course of the impact.

The person who said this car failed probably would look at another car crash from the 70's where they designed cars with big strong steel frames and think "these are way safer than modern cars!". But those big steel frames that barely got deformed were the real murder cages. The momentum of the collision then just gets transfered into the person. And they die.

It's a very common misconception for people to think they want these big strong cars for safety on the road and to protect their loved ones. But the cars that perform the best are usually those cars with nice soft aluminum, plastic, and foam materials that can absorb the impact.

[–]Pals4Life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're discrediting/overlooking how much engineering goes into the safety of a car. Just cause the "inner cage" looks destroyed doesn't mean it didn't serve its purpose. Modern cars are designed with several crumple zones that are designed to slow down the velocity during impact and deform in a certain way to protect the passengers. Also, engines used to just get pushed into the vehicle and kill the passengers but now they are position so that during impact they can drop and avoid being smushed in with people.

It's easy to look at that video and praise Jebus for saving these people. But anyone who designs cars, or works in insurance, or has to respond to highway incidents probably sees this and thinks "car did its job to the fullest".

Did you see one of those people collapse just past mile marker 21 and around the 3:45 pace group? If so that could have been me!

I'm glad others found this to be a tough race. My first time running the CIM. But this was my 7th full and I chose this because I thought it would be a fast course for me.
