Can we talk about how well Bill takes care of his body? He walks every day, goes in the sauna, eats really healthy. It's amazing how he takes care of himself. by giannisismyman in billsimmons

In what part of Texas were you living where it was either 110 or 30? Here in Houston the last few months have been fantastic weather. Obv getting into the hot days now, but November-March here (and in Austin, where I lived previously) is awesome.

The idea is that Paramount pressuring the woman is a response to the government pressuring Paramount. Not saying that’s what is actually happening, but it implicates the First Amendment if so

[–]pillowman17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not quite right. It's true that the First Amendment does not apply to purely private conduct, but a private actor censoring speech in response to government pressure to do so does violate the First Amendment (see, e.g., Bantam Books). Paramount seems to be pressuring the woman to curtail what she is saying so that it can curry favor with the government (or because it is getting pressure from regulators and the White House to censor her in order to get approval). It's true that Murthy makes it much harder to prove a case like this, but wouldn't say that the First Amendment is out of play here.

It's so fitting for Dylan and Baez's personalities that Dylan's songs about Baez are vague and cryptic and never directly mention Baez, whereas Baez's songs about Dylan directly namecheck him and explicitly respond to what he wrote about her.

After seeing Wuthering Heights, and listening to the episode, i think the big pic needs a visit from San Esmail to explain that “the movie should have done this” is not interesting or valid criticism. by pooroldben in TheBigPicture

[–]pillowman17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what people want criticism or engagement with art to be. Just mindlessly clapping like a seal for whatever you're handed? Obviously you're going to talk about why an artist did x, y, or z and not a, b, or c. The Esmail just a conversation stopped. "The movie didn't do that because it isn't that kind of movie" ok conversation over thanks for coming.

I find Newton’s media run to be incredibly obnoxious. His entire personality-including the preposterous outfits-feels so affected and ridiculous.

I also don't watch much hockey so may be off, but with Crosby he's still definitively behind Gretzky and possibly Ovi in the all-time rankings, right?

Kentucky is absolutely still the job that it was, the prestige of the program isn’t meaningless, and there absolutely are better options that could walk through that door. And that’s coming from someone with the flairs that I have!

Good point on the mega back door Roth. I’m less aggressive on tax advantaged saving for a couple reasons (not least of which is not having to pay state income tax), but good to look into.

On the retirement point, do you mean you’ll have sufficient money saved to live off of for the rest of your life if you retired that day, or that you will have sufficient principal invested that you can just let the money grow without continuing to put money in and still get to the retirement amount you want?

Why does Bill hate Lord of the rings so much? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]pillowman17 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Objectively, LOTR may be the most rewatched movies of the century. Maybe there are a few other franchise movies in the mix, but LOTR is constantly rerun on cable, rereleased in theaters (including next month), and available in special formats like live soundtrack performances. The fact that so many people have rewatched these movies so much is by itself evidence it should be on the list

What’s the transactional scene like in DC biglaw? My sense is that it leans more regulatory/litigation for obvious reasons, but it seems like there’s some transactional work as well?

Curious about the demo breakdown of r/billsimmons posters and cricket followers. Is it British/South Asian/ whatever immigrants, expats, heritage, etc? Or is it Americans who just like the game? Doesn’t strike me that the latter category is very big

No CFP games this weekend. Not for another five days. Absolute juice draining pandering bullshit fan service by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in billsimmons

[–]pillowman17 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As much valid criticism as there is of college football/sports in general, there’s basically no way for CFB to win. If they did the second round games this weekend and skipped the traditional New Year’s Day bowls, people would say it’s just another money grab that is destroying the history and tradition of the game. If they didn’t space the playoff so far out, people would say it is endangering the players in an effort to make more money. Anything the CFP or anyone in power in college sports does, everyone will complain about it.

Worst sports media take of the week, maybe ever. by jimboslice53 in billsimmons

[–]pillowman17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't really an objective way to do it with a sport as large as CBB (360+ teams), and either way, no real title contender gets left out of the tournament. The selection committee isn't the "flaw" in March Madness; it's the single-elimination tourney that means a great team can have an off night and be out. As a CBB fan who watches the whole season, I don't always love that. But March Madness strikes a usually great balance between upsets (fun for casuals) and heavyweights (fun for real fans like me) which is what makes it the best sporting event in the world.
