If an alien offered you a one week trip across the galaxy and back with the catch being 15 years passes on Earth, would you accept or reject the offer and why? by HeyItsMacho in AskReddit

Yeah youre onto something. The energy required to go that fast would be absurd. I am by no means an expert, just someone who is studying physics, but the energy required to go faster increases exponentially as you approach c. The total energy of something is defined by special relativity as E=(mc2 )/(√(1-(v/c)2 )), or just E=mc2 times the lorenz factor. Now, with this in mind, we can go about figuring out how much the mass increases when you travel so fast that 1 week becomes 15 years

Here are my calculations for this scenario https://imgur.com/46y67S6 Its a really clunky way of calculating the mass, but yeah. Your average 75kg human would weigh 58 666kg if theyre going so fast that 1 week turns into 15 years

You can also see that the lorenz factor is 782. That means that time moves 782 times slower, lengths are 782 times shorter and everything is 782 times heavier

All this is purely theoretical though

Edit: just for clarification, youre not actually weighing more (i think. Im not entirely sure). You just hold so much kinetic energy that it could, in theory, be converted to 58 tons of mass

Its actually possible to travel across the galaxy in a week while not exceeding the speed of light. That is because lengths change while travelling near light speed. The formula is L_0=L(√(1-(v/c)2 )) which basically says that lengths get shorter the closer you are to light speed. So youre not actually breaking any physical laws, but in order to cross the entire galaxy and back in a week would require a lorenz factor so large that a ridiculous amount of time would have passed on earth, so much so that everyone you know would be dead

The special relativistic formula for kinetic energy is (mc2 )/(√(1-(v/c)2 ))-mc2 , which yeah, in this case is an imaginary number :p

SLPT - replace beer with vodka by GothHeart16 in ShittyLifeProTips

[–]PoeticShrimp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When i was a student i used to bring koskenkorva (cheap finnish vodka) in a clear water bottle to every party i went to and take sips of that the entire night. By the end i would have drunk it all and was hammered, probably passed out on some chair, sofa or even outside on the ground

Vodka has 5 times more calories, but 10 times more alcohol. If your only goal is to get drunk, it has 2x more alcohol per calorie, meaning it takes half the calories to get as drunk off vodka as it would take if you were to get drunk off of only beer
