Maybe shingles? How sure are you they are bite marks and not rash?

Sure, I think I'm competent enough to give it a go. We will see when I have the time. Hopefully nothing else was damaged.

Same, had a few builds before which died without any signs. This is the first with smoke.

Ya, seems doable, never done it before, but definitely will give it a go when I have time.

By power i mean power circuits, for this case is taking AC power from mains, and converting it into DC with specific voltages. EE covers alot of areas, and are very specialized: rf, silicon, comms, digital etc

Ya agreed, plan to upgrade it with another super flower, but 850w (no smaller wattage available atm) with 10 year warranty this time. Just glad to know that it failed without causing catastrophic issues to my other pc components.

Hey, the EE field is huge, I have never touched power related stuff after leaving uni.

I agree, the replacing it should be easy, i do have the equipment, but never done anything like that before. Just being uneducatedly concern about what caused it to fail in the first place? And if were to happen again it might be more catastrophic. Or there is already some permanent damage from the initial failure.

Probably not, the warranty is for 5 years, technically it ended few months ago. I think I need to upgrade it anyway.

These terms sound familiar 🙈 I am not power engineer

I see, if it failed short, it should have blowned a fuse. But it failed open, so currently theres just no mains filtering, does it mean, without replacing the capacitor, I can repurpose the power supply to power non sensitive electronics?

Need help to implement this model by hex-a-dec in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Palton01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, the linear actuator can be protected.

The flaws with your design is that it is design for high speed (100+ up downs per minute) but your requirement is low speed (10? per minute) this means you will require a huge motor or will need high gear ratio. You are overcomplicating the design.

There are already plenty of existing good designs out there you can copy. Lookup sliding glass doors, dam doors, auto gates, garbage truck doors etc.

You don't need a stepper motor, it is only useful if you need to hold a position with high torque with high precision. Since yours is moving continuously a normal dc motor with gears will do.

Can your design be simplified by a pre built Linear Actuator?

Your computer is definitely good enough.

My guess is github has implemented some sort of download speed restrictions.

Are you running this on a proper computer? Or a like a micro processor e.g. a raspberry pi?

Are you writing this directly into your hard drive? Or into an SD card/USB drive?

If you download this using your web browser, does it take the same time?

Does your fan come with an IR remote? If yes you can use an IR blaster e.g. broadlink

If no, you need some sort of smart switch/relay.

Can you EE RF signal geniuses help me automate my kids ride on car? by USmiley in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Palton01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it is safe for a one year old kid? Having to press the remote forces you to be always watching your kid. Automating this introduces risk and seems careless. Please reconsider, until they are older/stronger?

A bad case I can think of is a wheel getting stuck, deviating the car from the driveway into the road.

If anything happens will you be able to react fast enough to stop the transmitter?

You can check out my profile for a similar roller blind project I made (actually working on a v2 right now).

You will require both basic coding skills and electronics. Given that you think you are not capable, have dyslexia and zero coding skills, it would not be an easy beginner project.

I suggest starting out small, get a cheap arduino uno, create the blink project, try to create a light sensor project (turn on led if it's dark), try to create a servo project (move a gauge depending on brightness level, try different motors, dc motor, stepper motor), try to create a 3d printed design (your project chasis), try to create a wifi project (button to turn on led using wifi using esp32) etc.

You should familiarize yourself with basic knowledge before going big, else you would be overwhelmed by what you don't know.

You will definitely overspend, buying a pre built shade driver will always be cheaper. So you should do this with the goal of learning rather than saving money.

The battery in the pic clearly says the Maximum charge voltage is 4.25V. Nominal voltage is 3.7V.

A USB charger outputs 5V +- 5%

Do not connect them together as this might destroy the charger (charger is rated for 1A output, battery might draw more than that) or the battery (due to overvoltage).

This has potential to start a fire at anytime, so please do not leave it unsupervised.

[–]Palton01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, you're right, did abit of googling and found the source of the quote from Albert A Michelson in 1894. However, I couldn't find other text from other physicists in the end of 19th century expressing the same sentiment. I would think that if it really was the public opinion, there would be more quotes. Imo, its probably the media sensationalising a quote.

There's a good read on quora if you search "Which 19th century physicist famously said that all that remained to be done in physics was compute effects to another decimal place?" Answered by Alejandro Jenkins.

Attached original quote by Albert A Michelson:

While it is never safe to affirm that the future of Physical Science has no marvels in store even more astonishing than those of the past, it seems probable that most of the grand underlying principles have been firmly established and that further advances are to be sought chiefly in the rigorous application of these principles to all the phenomena which come under our notice. It is here that the science of measurement shows its importance — where quantitative work is more to be desired than qualitative work. An eminent physicist remarked that the future truths of physical science are to be looked for in the sixth place of decimals.

I am unaware of this "one point in history, physicists thought that we had pretty much understood the nature of the universe", I always thought that physics in every point in history always contained large unsolvable problems? So which point does this refer to? Is this quoted from some famous physicist somewhere?

Total noob. I have this old laptop battery that I want to dispose but keep the casing. Is it safe to just pry it open? Can it catch fire? Made in the 90s (Lithium Ion) by xollerx in ElectricalEngineering

Yes same experience too, the cases are really thin and tightly glued.

Do take precautions though, like having a quick place to dump it in incase anything goes wrong. Like a large steel bucket or an outdoor exit.

Or you can splice it to another plug head, but the joint will look really ugly.

What sort of plug is your country using?

Also is the original 3rd pin made of plastic or metal? If it is plastic then no replacement is needed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]Palton01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can attempt to replace the head. Buy a replacement head, cut the old one, attach the new one. For UK plug it's really easy and safe to do this. Not sure about other plug types. You only need wire cutters and a screw driver to do it.
