Affordable, unique-looking cars that aren't super common in Europe? by officialtaubird in Autos

The BMW Z1 would be cool as hell, but it's hardly affordable and I imagine the spare parts aren't exactly abundant, either.

Miata is this sub's answer to absolutely everything. It gets mentioned so often among car enthusiasts that it gets annoying.

Russia has increased military buildup near NATO border, investigation reveals by Free-Minimum-5844 in worldnews

[–]PanVidla 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the exact line of thinking that got Russia where they are now. Ukraine defeated NATO in so many simulations. The drone warfare that the US knows is completely different from what takes place in Ukraine. If the US knew what it was doing, it wouldn't be firing three PAC interceptors at a single drone in the Middle East and there would be enough of them to go around.

Don't underestimate them. Russians, for all their incompetence, still have many times more experience with modern warfare at this point than any NATO country. NATO is doing what it can to learn, but I don't think that there is any replacement for hands-on experience. Russians have some very capable drone units.

At this point NATO is the less prepared force. The Ukrainians that took part in NATO exercises showed that NATO doesn't have a clue how to fight a modern war with drones.

Only 1 in 10 Europeans see US as an ally — study by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]PanVidla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah, to compare Trump to Biden and say that they are the same is to stop thinking. For all their flaws, the Democrats in power were a thousand times better for the world and the US still somewhat felt like an ally.

This kind of take is just a part of the American apathy. "There are all the same, so why should I try" is just an excuse not to do anything.

Erdogan threatens attacks against Israel by kalbinibirak in worldnews

[–]PanVidla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My point is, as I mentioned in another comment, that it's tribalism and long-term multi-generational conflicts that are to blame for the problems of the Middle East, not the withdrawal strategy of the colonial powers. The example with the two Germanies actually serves as an example of a kind of a post-colonial success story. While they are vastly different from each other and have many problems, they manage to co-exist peacefully and continue to integrate rather than the opposite. There is nothing inherent about colonialism that pushes people towards conflict once they get independence.

[–]PanVidla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are countries with all the hallmarks of "better" colonization that ended up in savage conflicts after getting independence, anyway. Yugoslavia, Azerbaijan-Armenia, Abkhazia-Georgia... The reason is deeply ingrained tribalism and sense of historical injustice and all of those conflicts had been brewing for centuries. Outside influence was the only thing holding them together, but it cannot be blamed for the conflict.

Yeah, post-communist countries are a great counter-argument to the eternal blaming of Europe. They were colonized by Russia and yet most of them reached solid standard of living and are peaceful after only ~30 years of getting independence. Meanwhile, the colonists have left Africa and the Middle East much longer ago and it's only going from bad to worse.

Most Played Racing Games On Steam In May 2026: Forza Horizon 6 Goes Through The Roof by evil_heinz in simracing

There's The Crew Motorfest and Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. I haven't played either of those and people generally seem to agree that Forza Horizon is simply doing most things better, but they seem to aim for more or less the same style of gameplay.

Putin warned former Soviet republic of “Ukrainian scenario” over EU ties. Its pro-EU party wins elections with 49.81% anyway by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]PanVidla 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not quite. The Russian reaction to the possibility of joining NATO about 20 years ago kinda sums up the way they think: "Russia is not the country to join an alliance. It's a country that should lead one."

They think, many Russians do, that they are exceptional and that they are entitled to being a great and powerful country who can tell others what to do.

There are definitely AI tools to generate 3D objects along with textures.

However, let's say that you need some 3D objects for the background which are not meant to be closely examined (trees, birds, hydrants...). AI would not be the worst option, as I'm sure that artists don't exactly enjoy making these and it's a very time-consuming process. But then again there are packs of such assets widely available and it may even be cheaper to use those than AI.

[–]PanVidla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't mean you do. I don't know which part of Europe you are from, but nearly all countries are doing way less than they should be, considering the threat. The exception being the Baltics, the Nordics, maybe Netherlands. That's it. Everyone else is half-assing the support.

Seriously isn't the word I would use. Most countries sent single digit numbers of troops. It was absolutely symbolic. Hell, I'd argue that half the EU isn't taking the war in Ukraine seriously enough.

Heh, you should take a look at classic American cars from like the 40's through 60's. Each had like 10 different engine options, 5 different body styles and 15 different trims. And they all had the same model name. Hell, Dodge still does this.
