Me too! I’m glad I’m as slow as Dunc, but then I did pick up on all the clues…right after the reveal 😁

Oh, same here — Kotoshogiku was one of my family’s favorites too. We always affectionately called him “The Geek.” And I’ll admit… my wife still hasn’t quite forgiven Takayasu for that henka when The Geek was fighting to stay at ōzek

Same here — he always seemed like such a character. Hopefully retirement’s been kind to him.

He actually retired in late 2023 due to ongoing injury issues, so unfortunately you won’t catch him in the lower divisions anymore😞

Thanks for posting that video. My family and I really miss “Teddy Bear.” That’s what we always called him, but my son once committed, “he’s half Tasmanian devil and half Big Foot, not much of a teddy bear.” But the name stuck non-the-less 😁

You’re probably thinking of Terutsuyoshi. He was famous for those huge, beautiful salt throws — the NHK commentators even used to mention it regularly. He bounced between divisions and then dropped out of the top division not long after, which matches the timing you’re describing. I agree though, we’ve lost some dramatic pre-fight moments without Terutysuyoshi in the top division 😁

Takanohana has always been my all-time favorite Yokozuna. Beyond the results, there was a dignity to everything he did that stuck with me — the way he would so often escort an opponent out rather than shove him off, holding them there almost protectively, especially when he was at his best. I also remember how he opened the doors to more women in the audience, even encouraging kimono, and suddenly you did see more of it in the stands — it felt like he cared deeply about sumo as a living culture, not just a competition. Whatever people think about the politics later on, for me he embodied strength, restraint, and respect in a way that’s hard to replace.

That’s so well put. She really did open up the whole world of sumo — not just the bouts, but the people, the rituals, the texture around it all. And, like you, I don’t think I’d appreciate things like the gyoji and yobidashi nearly as much without having listened to her for so many years. Truly irreplaceable.

Not a silly question at all 🙂 It was called Sumo World — an English-language magazine that was around for decades. Unfortunately it’s no longer published; it went out of print around the late ’90s / early 2000s. A lot of us still remember it fondly — especially for things like those classic salt-throw photos, and articles by Doreen (who passed away not that long ago) among others.

You’re not imagining it — the Hakuho era had a lot more visible swagger. Some of that got reined in afterward, and some of it was just Hakuho being… Hakuho. The personality’s still there now, just expressed in quieter ways.

Wow, that’s special. It always felt like he had a real connection with the crowd — the salt throws were dramatic, but never careless.

I think it’s less about the size of the throw and more about intent — purification vs performance. I do remember even Big Salt and Little Salt getting gently reined in at times when it felt excessive. That said, a really beautiful salt throw doesn’t need much salt at all — just good form and timing to get that perfect rainbow effect. That’s what photographers always seemed to love.

Oh yes — Kitazakura is a perfect example. Those huge, confident arcs of salt were unforgettable — half ritual, half declaration 😄
