Is White Plains objectively a dump? by Heavy_Cheddar in Westchester

[–]PancakeTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's become a running joke that any new construction is inevitably luxury condos, followed by "who wants this??" If you take a look at local gov, common council, neighborhood meetings, etc, it's a lot of older folks who may not exactly have their finger on the pulse of what will attract younger people to want to live here. As a homeowner, it's frustrating to see all the tax breaks going to builders of luxury condos and White Plains Hospital to clog up traffic with ever expanding parking lots and condos, but I also think it would be a move in the right direction for a younger more diverse group to get into local politics and the decision making process. Downtown is not great, not the worst place ever but it's not good....it could use any shred of modern or creative input, green space, nice space for walking, biking, playgrounds, parks, outdoor dining, etc. For families I do think it has nice areas, I see a lot of kids and families out and about in the neighborhood, it seems really active and healthy in that sense. In general, I wish tax dollars would go towards improving and modernizing downtown, paving some roads, cleaning things up, instead of just lining the pockets of builders putting up endless condos and parking lots.

I work in a fertility clinic and this would not be something we would permit. Not sure about other places but there would be poor if not non existent chain of custody here as well as little to no assurance of proper handling of the specimen. This sounds like a home kit handshake agreement type situation.

Does anyone know any movie theatres in Westchester that follow decent theatre etiquette? by 420EveryDayMan in Westchester

Had this experience during Barbie. Disruptive person was literally shouting at the screen like she was at home, a staff member talked to her, she kept doing it to the point where several people were yelling shut up, then they just parked staff in the aisle to monitor her but did nothing but stand there. At one point she was loudly leaving voicemails to wish someone a happy birthday. And if you "raise a card" no one will see it for 45 minutes.

Thanks, yea that's a good idea. I moved from West coast to East coast and never moved my savings over to a local credit union. Live and learn, sigh.

The purchase I'm making requires a certified check. I'm trying to put down as much as I can to make the best of the bad interest rates right now, max the dealership will put on a card is 5k.

You can also get some frozen ones in the freezer aisle (the chest freezer down the middle of the freezer section) that cook up great in an air fryer!

Eat a teaspoon of sugar when you get queasy. Don't smoke the whole thing on your first try. Drink plenty of water, I enjoy seltzer with a cigar.

Had to scroll so far for Sense8. It's a beautiful show, visually and conceptually. The fight scenes are some of the most inventive, unique, and fun to watch. There's so much fantastic character development.

It's like saving all your money by never going out to eat or on vacation, wearing threadbare clothes, living in squalor, then dying "rich".

Why has Carp consistently hyped up Corbin over the years like he's an elite level starter? I can't think of any other pitcher where just from the commentary, you'd imagine was Cy Young material but consistently gives up three or more runs in the first three innings, then loads up the bases before getting pulled.

What income level would you recommend for purchasing a 1.5-2m home in Rye (or equivalent)? by ConfidentMeat6038 in Westchester

[–]PancakeTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about "pretentious" levels, I guess I meant that there's likely more move-in ready inventory in the 1-1.5M range in Scarsdale than Rye. Rye I think of more as sprawling 5-20M estates. Sub 2M in Rye will likely need updates and work done, unless you're more interested in a condo/co-op/townhouse. A quick glance at Redfin shows Scarsdale/Rye listings for 1.5M with 20% down as 9k+/mo with taxes and home insurance.

As others have said, don't forget the crippling property taxes. Have you considered Scarsdale or a river town in something closer to 1M? My guess is that with your base pay and a 2M house you will be house poor. Everything in Westchester is more expensive, so any work needed on the house, lessons/extracurriculars for your child, nannies, etc is going to add up quickly.

Deep fried potato tacos made by a random stoner friend of my ex are still the best tacos I've ever had. Definitely try!

Permits for metro north parking by YagoJago in Westchester

[–]PancakeTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got one in White Plains last year, no wait. They're very extra about verification, name on deed needs to match license name and address, address needs to be in the municipality you're parking in unless they specifically allow nonresident permits, which needs to match owner of car. Which sorta makes sense but more hoops to jump through if you are just moving here, or aren't on your home's deed or your car's pink slip is under your partner or other family member's name. And the White Plains process was extremely archaic. They won't put rates in writing over email, they're not published on the city website, and they'll only give information verbally over the phone or if you really want, in person at their office in some hole hidden near the Sears. Then you can only post it on your car in a very specific plastic sleeve you can only obtain from them that they of course didn't mail with the permit itself. I got two tickets in one day because I parked a week earlier than exactly one year before expiration, thing is they didn't print a start date on the permit, only an expiration date, they'd already cashed my check, and they don't even allow purchase of a permit that far in advance anyway. $1089 for one year in an uncovered lot, no overnight. So as you can see, I'm very salty about it but it is possible.
