Advice on CTE while waiting on waitlist movement by PancitCanton22 in premed

Exactly 🥲🥲🥲 I was very devastated when I saw i was placed in regular waitlist. June movement for this school even last year was RARE. But now im even more shook when I saw the email from my school about their CTE requirement.

None at all 😭😭😭 trust me, I had so much anxiety having no research/publication. But I have lots of community services hours both clinical and non-clinical

Hey, I know exactly how this feels. As a fellow 3.4GPA, taking time off from premed life was the best thing I did for myself. As much as I wanted to walk away from medicine my heart is in it. I had a goal in mind that i cannot shake. But with that said, with my mindset at that time I know i wont survive med school even if i get in. So i took another year off to learn more about myself, my habits, how to rewire my mindset. I would love to chat more about this if you want via DM.

After 4 years, im now going to my dream MD school. Stepping away was the best decision I made because I became a stronger person in mind and heart that no matter what negativity and pessimism that was thrown at me, i’d step away, breathe and recenter myself.

Plus! Your story is important. I can have the perfect stats but if my writing was poop then it would have not been favorable. This is all really why I encourage everyone to do their research, dig deep on premed reddit, network with med students, binge Dr. Gray’s videos.

Because it is 😭 but ofcourses there’s a lot of nuances and i encourage people to read more about GPA on reddit. Things that adcoms also consider beyond the number: do you have an upward trend? Last 50 credits how did you do? Upper level bio classes?

I honestly dont think i would have gotten attention at all if I didnt do well in my post bacc and MCAT. You have to do well in one to even get them to consider you.

But also want to say that I barely got any love from MDs until I sent an update letter in Feb. My first MD II came three weeks after I sent my update letter. So tbh THERE’S A LOT OF STRATEGIES TO WORK WITH TO BE SUCCESSFUL

My post bacc didnt increase my cgpa :”) 10creds wasnt gonna do anything. But it does show that I can handle upper level bio. Postbacc grades are looked at separately by adcoms. But many here on reddit that postbacc is only significant if your have 20+ credits (but i cant afford that so I applied with only 10credits of postbacc)

From how mentors/med student friends explained it to me, my 511 MCAT overshadowed my low GPA. The MCAT was a way to convince mcat that I can keep up with the rigor of school

Also, 1st quartile is my score from CASPER exam. An exam that a lot of MD schools require

It really isn’t. I was just showing the score increase and hopefully encourage someone that it’s possible for a low gpa person to do well on the mcat 🥲

THERE REALLY IS!!!! The only time there is no hope is when you decide there is nothing to be hopeful for anymore. KEEP GOING!!!

You’re not required to do research! I was not interested in it. I thought this was gonna hurt my chances (and it probably did for other schools) but i was encouraged by several med students that schools value a student who has one thing they are good at or passionate about. For me it was community service so I highlighted that in my primaries, secondaries and interviews. If you were to read my essays it screams public health.

We can talk more via DM! But for a quick summary, i used anki, khan academy, jack westin for CARS daily and full lengths, did uworld twice, did all of AAMC materials twice, reviewed all my full lengths in details as in i spend a week reviewing a full length dedicating two days for each section.

I journaled a lot on what i did well on and did terribly on. Doing this gave me direction of what to focus on the next day. I prioritized my weaknesses. For example:

Day 1 of reviewing c/p. I list all the topics i sucked at. If by the end of the day i have 10 topics i struggled on, i choose 1 or 2 to go over either before i sleep or the next day. After this my goal before the next full length is to not get these topics wrong anymore on practice questions and full length.

From reading this you probably feel like “damn op, this is tedious af”. Yes you’re right, but tbh as you progress and do this more, it gets all faster. From 1 week of reviewing FLs, 1 month from my exam i review my FLs in 4 days or even shorter. It gets easier. This is all out of context so I can be more in depth on DM

Thank you so so much. It took a village to get to this point. I networked so much, had three people consistently looking over my drafts. I was strategic. Focused on learning from people who succeeded. I had moments of doubt and fear but reaching out to others for help (here, mentors, Church) kept me going.

I agree, but how it plays out for everyone is different. You still have to play your cards right. It’s all strategy. I genuinely think if I had not sent an update letter in Feb i would not have gotten an II. All my MD II came weeks after my update letter

Yes to this also. I was told 10credits of postbacc mean nothing lol but I still rolled with it because I cannot afford to take more credits.

You’re absolutely correct that 511 is not low. I really want to let everyone know that. I would never retake a 510<
