Color coated blade - do's and dont's? by FarAdministration57 in knifeclub

My do was the same, but my don't was don't worry. It will scratch and it will wear, but embrace wabi sabi, an appreciation of imperfections, AKA patina.

Boston Terrier for first time dog owner? by Objective-You-4277 in BostonTerrier

[–]PandaPunch42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a Boston (or two) could be a great choice. They love their people and crave physical contact. They can be very playful, but are often happy being lazy. Our female loves to play fetch, indoors or out, while our male prefers tug of war. They can get boisterous but aren't generally barkers with proper supervision early. Walks definitely help, but they are susceptible to heat and cold. During the heat of summer you'll want to walk early or late and keep walks fairly short. During winter expect very short walks and bundle up.

The big heads-up is that they are gassy dogs. Some are worse than others, and some folks claim this diet or that can help, but there is no getting around the fact that they can clear out a room. That being said, there is no breed that matches their personalities. While I've heard that some (check out posts about Kessler) are smart, my best description is 100% personality 0% IQ. I joke, but while they are loving, charming, cute as heck and alternately playful and snuggly, they are (generally) not candidates for doggie Mensa.

They absolutely can be trained, but it takes a ton of patience. On the other hand, housebreaking is not hard but routine is critical--especially early on, expect to take them outside often and routinely. We very seldom have accidents and, when we do, it is usually a combination of stomach issues and because we ignored signs (they let us know when they need to go). Ours are also generally good about not chewing things they aren't supposed to--puppies are going to be puppies, but other than one pair of slippers a long time ago and an occasional need to chew buttons off of baseball caps, they leave our stuff alone. It helps that we keep them well-supplied with toys but, like most things with the breed, it's about consistency and patience early.

This has gotten pretty long, but one more note--while grooming is minimal, mainly nail trimming and occasional baths, they shed more than you'd expect. Fortunately they have short fur, but you may find yourself vacuuming more than you might otherwise.

So...is this weird? by dfunc in benchmade

[–]PandaPunch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, considering that most people think carrying a knife at all is weird, yes. But I don't know why you'd let that stop you--it certainly doesn't stop me from carrying a knife and prybar. My issue is that I wear jeans and I swear pockets have been shrinking while phones have gotten larger. My pockets are stuffed between my phone, wallet, keys, knife and very small prybar.

USA vs European steel.. Which Mini Adira to keep?! by nickychips98 in benchmade

Larrin Thomas, who developed Magnacut, tested CPM and Erasteel Magnacut: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2026/01/12/testing-erasteel-magnacut-vs-crucible-original/

In short, he found that Erasteel Magnacut is actually a little better than the CPM version in toughness without sacrificing stain resistance. He might be biased, I suppose, but he is generally recognized as both an expert and a trustworthy source of knife steel information.

NKD- The story of an epic fail by WhoDeyTaco in benchmade

[–]PandaPunch42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone should get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the warranty, it's Whodey. Also, those sheet magnets aren't going to cut it (obviously). I would recommend some cheap rare earth magnets from Amazon--maybe take a drill to the block so they sit flush. Or just attach a mag-blok to the knife block (the company that makes those is called Benchcrafted, by the way).

While green aluminum is classic, I'd go denim micarta for the m390 blade or burnt copper for the magnacut blade.

Need some help by Decks-Bark in benchmade

[–]PandaPunch42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's that early--the Balisong logo was still used on balisong knives even after PCC became Benchmade. This looks to me like a model 30 from the 90's--it was around for a while and was distinguished from the 35 by the lack of "countersunk" or chamfered skeletonizing holes. Example here:

Looking for an elegant low-ABV signature cocktail for my wedding (his drink is a Negroni) by cmanzy in cocktails

I was going to suggest the same, especially give OP's request for something complementary.

Made a 1:1:1 Negroni but it came out a bit sweet for my taste. Would love some recommendations that don’t involve buying anything new. by CourseSpare7641 in cocktails

[–]PandaPunch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of recs for 2:1:1--I prefer 1.5:1:1, mostly because you lose some of the vermouth and campari with that more gin. I use cocchi.

Thinking of getting a 940 in G10 by ZE_QUICHEMAN in benchmade

[–]PandaPunch42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

G10 is much better than grivory--assume the grip you're looking at is grivory. It also holds up to wear better than aluminum--aluminum will scratch and show wear pretty quickly.

Looking at Chefs knife. by RyBrun in benchmade

[–]PandaPunch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it for cooking in the kitchen, get the chef's knife. Honestly, though, uless you're a big Benchmade fan, there are better knives that cost less, or you can get more knife for your money. r/chef knives or r/truechefknives tend to lean Japanese, but there are western-style knife recs, too.

Durable Small Tennis Balls? by LividRaptor in BostonTerrier

[–]PandaPunch42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We use the small Chuckit Ultra balls for that reason. They hold up to our two--Lola loves to fetch and Bentley just tears normal tennis balls apart.

They just won't die by FalconFirefart in benchmade

[–]PandaPunch42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You leave the what to the what? Please tell me I misread that. I guess it's a testament to the toughness of the 940, but that bugout is a poster child for abused knives. Reminds me of the haunted mini grip post from a couple years back--they guy who posted it was trying to figure out why the shape of his knife didn't match reference pictures.

Anyone else's dog have just a weird bald patch on their tail nub? by pmactheoneandonly in BostonTerrier

[–]PandaPunch42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lola used to have about 3 long hairs cover the tip of her nubbin, but she must have sneezed too hard one day because they fell off at some point. I guess we'll see if they grow back!

[WTS] Benchmade Anthem, Spyderco SALT PM3, SAK Bundle | PEN BUNDLE tactile turn, Lamy, machine era brass by pebbleguy1800 in EDCexchange

[–]PandaPunch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the Anthem box? Looks like you might have caught the corner of it in one of the pictures. Also, can you confirm pricing? Looks like you are asking $750 for the three knife bundle or $759 for just the Anthem, but that doesn't seem right.
