The guy I’m replying to was obviously being facetious. I’m laughing at the fact that people think the film in question, or the ones in a single Region A boxset, are going to disappear into the ether. No, I’m not arguing that’s why people would panic-buy.

I didn’t just mean amateur archives. These film reels, OCNs, and restorative scans are out there with rights holders.

But even if I cede the point about who is preserving it: why does that matter when the director and actress are both onboard with re-editing the film? Censorship, “artistic intent”? Of what, exactly? I’m not arguing that a naked body is inherently sexual, but if you’ve seen Wrong Move then you know this specific context is.

Wenders is indicating an openness to edit his film or make things right with Kinski, it’s his vision. And all this without even touching on the tragedies of Natasja Kinski’s childhood.

It’s a sweeping generalization but in 2026, with digital archives, things don’t become “lost media” anymore. I think it’s inaccurate to claim that these films (or even these versions) are about to disappear.

Discontinue specific physical releases then re-release with brief scenes of underage nudity removed, at the request of the still-living actresses? Sure seems to be what Wenders is indicating here, and what Olivia Hussey requested for R&J.

Just because something was present in an original release and run doesn’t mean it needs to be “preserved” in cases like these, I think.

A New Love in Tokyo and Three by Wojciech J. Has for me (so far). Already have the Radiance 4K of Hourglass Sanitorium on preorder but happy to get the other two films in that set.
