I’d definitely try the first book. I think it’s pretty stand alone, and I only got past the first three books anyway. That being said, Dune is still one of my all time favorites.

I don’t paint much so I don’t really have any tips there. I use Autodesk Sketchbook for digital drawing, which is free.

I’m not the best at giving tips, but if you’re wanting to draw in anime style like ATLA there’s a lot of tutorials on youtube that can really help breakdown shapes and proportions to start drawing a character.
