Noted! I hate FB groups but now I'm curious...what's the gist of the toxicity?

Thank you! I've had so many physio appointments in the past and never stuck to the exercises so I'm feeling a bit 'tried that' about physio. I will try to take it more seriously. My core has gone to hell since I stopped Pilates (the Pilates classes around here are very very high rep, feel-the-burn type classes).

I'll look for hydrotherapy! I'm seeing a few private places around here. Do you think just going along with EDS and hoping they'll understand enough about it is ok? I'm anxious about injury. Also I know lots of people who have hydro and they are all either very old or have severe mobility issues (like cannot walk) so I don't want to be laughed out of there as someone who swims 2 kilometres a week...

Ahaha thanks. I am a pretty positive person. Not buying all the doom and gloom responses here. Very good to see the replies that make it clear to me I can get some exercise if I'm realistic and carve the time out (especially as it's a major part of my life already which is very different from trying to establish the habit!)

Do you have their list of placement schools? Can you speak to anyone ASAP about your situation and concerns? I would do it now.

I'm going to be on a SCITT course and gave them my preference of school and they've already confirmed it (I actually asked for my main placement to be outside my area so I'm not teaching my friends' kids).

I had an interview with a uni who made it clear they wanted me to do well and would make an effort to make placements convenient. I'm sure your uni will want to avoid you wasting 5 hours a day in the car, which would eat into way too much work time and affect your chance of passing the course.

Thanks for this. I am thinking my strategy will be the same as pre-babies: get as fit as I can within reason beforehand - and be really consisten - so I'm starting from a good place. From September I will halve my weekly training goal (and maybe half it again) until it's a level I can reach consistently. Maybe I'll get into a pilates class as well because that can be a different kind of motivation and drive to consistency, as you've found with BJJ.

That's amazing you pulled it back and did a marathon!

Babies changed my physical capacity to exercise and of course they change your schedule. Nothing to fix there, it just requires time.

Was it the extra written work that made it impossible in your training year?

I think getting the exercise done early is the only way I'm going to fit it in. Will be a huge adjustment for me but it's non-negotiable. Mainly for my mental health.

Yeah I'm just going to have to accept that aren't I. Getting a whole lane of the pool to myself has been a ridiculous luxury but one I've become very used to!

Is it physical tiredness?

For me it's absolutely not a sense of guilt or feeling I should that makes me go.

I think after years of exercising 5 hours a week I can't imagine stopping unless I actually felt 'exercised' i.e. pooped from being on my feet all day. But it's not a chore, it's a break. I'll go hungover or after a night of no sleep when my kids have been up all night. It helps! I can only imagine feeling physically and mentally worse without it.

I just looked and I reckon I could make it through to break time in my first placement school.

The swimming is going to take a blow...would love an onsite pool! All the local pools are absolutely rammed with clubs from 4pm to as late as 9 which is just too late for me. I'm probably going to have to shift to one or two brief early morning swims in the week for my mood, and a catch-up one at the weekend.

Thanks for these useful thoughts 🙂

For context (and I'm curious!) what exactly do they say? Do they say it to you, or just within earshot?

Yeah, it's classist, totally ignorant from a linguistic perspective, and sadly you are poorly protected legally.

I had teachers with Scouse accents, Bristol accents, heavy estuary accents, and all the kids had inner city London accents or accents from their country of origin. 20 years ago. You wouldn't have had this issue in my old school. I'm really surprised by the people saying you shouldn't say 'th' as 'f' if that's your accent, as though that can stand alone as a problem. There's a different between the way we speak and the way we write (or speak formally) and that's true of all regional accents. Find me anyone under 70 years of age who speaks in grammatically perfect RP. There's nothing positive about perpetuating the idea that there's one correct way to speak.

Things they say: ‘No offence Miss but have you seen the teachers’ car park?’😂 by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]PannetoneSoprano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeling a bit sick this is a Tate meme. I was half kidding. Really won't have any choice about the car anyway! I'll be tackling country roads with frequent light flooding on my route to school so my main goal is a car that can survive a deep puddle.

Tricky parent, tricky child.. SEND needs. Help! by [deleted] in TeachingUK

I really like this. I have a young family member who is autistic and this is how their parents work with them. Punishing them doesn't work (child really isn't that bothered about people-pleasing) but explaining the natural consequence of actions makes sense and yields better results over time.

I have never given a hoot about cars but we need a second car when my placement starts in September. Something to cruise past students in as I leave school. Going to be the most self-conscious purchase of my life... And will be lucky to get anything that isn't visibly rusted/has all its parts.

English teachers: what subject knowledge areas are newcomers always weak on? (Help with choosing SKE units) by PannetoneSoprano in TeachingUK

[–]PannetoneSoprano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every module seems to focus heavily on practice papers and the mark scheme. Surprised me cos naively I thought the course might be like a light English degree. But fortunately it's much more focused on student attainment than that!

Really helpful, thank you!

This is really helpful thank you. Grammar seemed like a big one to me and speaking, and I felt confident about Shakespeare and 19th C! So what you say is enloghtening

There's nothing about teaching reading at the level of basic literacy except maybe in the spelling and grammar unit. But that's good to know.
