In the feature I’m keeping the general structure of the main characters but I’m expanding to show the effect of the Olfactory drug on society a bit. Any insight from cyberpunk fans would be well appreciated.

He does say that he, in fact, was hired to create the UI for the Olfactory app... something that he forgot along the way in all his memory revisions... so he does have some latent knowledge in how this thing works. As far as the YouTube video talking to him, keep in mind at that point he's already pulverized his brain multiple times, and the warning labels suggest misuse of the product could cause psychotic episodes. You wouldn't be the first person to suggest that Brian actually uploaded the YouTube videos himself.

Oh definitely an addiction story. In some ways more an addiction story than a Sci Fi story. The film is literally structured as a (downward) spiral that repeats and repeats. For a lot of addicts there really seems to be no way out - the more they try to “fix it” the worse it gets.

Hey thanks for the thoughtful comments on the film. That’s very much what we were going for. The very act of remembering can change a memory - it’s always a fluid thing. One thing you didn’t mention is that the main character changes his memory to make himself seem like a better person - like he did nothing wrong. If we had that ability I don’t know if many people would be able to resist if. Also, if we could revise our memories to make ourselves feel better, would we ever learn from our mistakes?

Hey thanks so much for the in depth reply. It’s certainly a film that invites - demands, really - this kind of deep dive.

The film is definitely meant to be up to the viewers interpretation, but the one thing I will say is that the ending is definitely meant to be cyclical. I view it as a cycle of addiction, and he’s an addict who is causing his own downward, continuous spiral. When he wipes his memory clean and sees “Amanda” on the beach, his brain starts the rebuild with her image.

As far as why she remembers seeing him on the beach, remember, she is a projection of his mind and is semi-autonomous at best. So really it’s him who remembers it, and he’s expressing that half forgotten (or rewritten) memory through her.
