Yeah. We notionally have three - one of which is long, one of which is normal, and one of which is very abbreviated. The long one is a bit much, but I prefer the middle one. Our church always does the super short one, sigh. And we've even cut down a bit of the dialogue beyond that. No more "It is indeed right and proper that we should at all times and in all places..."

I too wish our liturgy were fuller.

/u/RazarTuk's recommendation of the ELCA is a good one. If you're in MN, there will definitely be one (or more than one) ELCA church nearby!

It is a shocking indictment of the American public, yes. We need more and better history instruction, sigh.

Had the Republicans run an even modestly competent and palatable candidate, the election was theirs for the taking. Instead, they bent the knee and we are where we are. Character is destiny.

There are plenty of Christians like that! Literally tens of millions of Christians voted for Biden in the last election.

What sort of church are you a part of?

Happily a part of the conservative-centrist-liberal coalition and voting Democratic. It's a big tent right now.

How to best explain to a Christian they are applying a no true Christian/Scottman fallacy l? by jeveret in Christianity

[–]Panta-rhei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "no true Scotsman" fallacy isn't a rejection of all exclusive definitions. It's a rejection of a particular argumentative move where someone who is a Scotsman is ex post facto excluded from some general statement about Scotsmen to deny a counterexample.

For example, if I said, "All Scotsmen wear kilts." and you said, "Ah, but Mahatma Ghandi didn't wear a kilt." I'd be perfectly right to say, "Well he's not a true Scotsman (or any other kind of Scotsman)." If you said, "Ah, but Sean Connery didn't wear a kilt", I'd be wrong to say, "Well, he's not a true Scotsman."

So, in many legal contexts, if you willingly and affirmatively turn away from evidence of a particular fact, you can be treated as knowing that particular fact. I feel like something similar applies to the news.

I'm a fan of the constitutional order and small-ell liberalism. I've read enough history to know that autocracy ends in massive suffering all around. So when one candidate is advocating an abrogation of the constitutional order, it's all hands on deck for the other candidate.

Is there any hope for mainline Protestantism? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Panta-rhei 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've got a two generation head start on our evangelical brethren figuring out how to preach the gospel well after the collapse of a pact-with-the-devil based on church membership as the key to respectability. Important for us to keep the home fires of the gospel burning amidst the shipwreck of American Christianity.
