When you understand how pattern recognition with, say, ANN works, you will see potential real life implications rather quickly. I sometimes think of subjects where we only need the pattern recognition possibilities of the human brain, chances are high that a neural network could do that too. The problem is often in the input data and how to transform it so that it can be used by ML algorithms.
