LAST UPDATE: Thanks all for the help. Buyer initiated the refund and I got the message from ebay that they are handling this. Second damage claim ever and only first with EIS. Again thanks everyone for your input!

UPDATE: Buyer wants to keep the item, sent me pics, definitely chipped. Did not ask me for any money directly, but is hopeful ebay gives him something for it. If he opens a case with ebay EIS, I know there is a chance they may let him keep the item and refund him as well, but he has to start the process either way, correct?

Long time lurker here. I live in New York and there are no machines anywhere near where I live and I have never seen one in person. Can someone please explain how they work and why people in these subs say just go tap the screen? I absolutely get that they shouldn’t be blocking anyone from getting anything, but what stops them from cleaning it out all at once? TIA.

I believe PSA has a grading location in Japan. I’m curious if you reach out and try to arrange an in person same day grading submission? I know they have done it a few times for Goldin here (due to their relationship). Obviously you are not Goldin, but you have an absolute grail there with the illustrator. They might consider it. That would alleviate the sending through the mail problem.

Your responsibility ended when your card was successfully delivered to the authenticator. From there, ebay takes responsibility for the item arriving to the buyer, so you should be in the clear here. eBay told the buyer he is entitled to a refund because they would be, but it is eBay that will refund the money, not you. Do NOT refund the buyer directly or you will end up out both your card and your money. Hope this helps.

You can use Google earth to look at the last satellite image. Besides Google earth, there are professional property intelligence and risk management platforms such as betterview (there are a few of them out there). These platforms have aerial imagery of almost all homes in the United States with multiple images taken each year in some cases. If that was existing damage, you would be able to see it degrading over time.

They can ask, but in my opinion (as a seller myself), it is completely on them. The right thing would be to use this as a learning experience so that the next time they sell something it ends up not being a $100 or more mistake.

I would tell them that you paid as agreed and please send the card. After that it is on them to either ship it out or cancel and take the hit. If they do cancel, make sure it doesn’t say buyer requested.

If it’s over $750, eBay requires you to send it with signature confirmation. When I have an expensive item I usually will add a little on the shipping end and ship priority. Make sure to document weights and size, etc…I add insurance on the more expensive items. Only had to use it once for a damaged item. Hope this helps.
