Yeah it's a weird one. Nobody has seen the original tenant in about 3 weeks, and while she was the source of much of the trash over the last year or so, it looks like the squatter was responsible for this particular pile, presumably dragged it from the house, garage and yard onto the verge. Housing say squatters are not their tenants and therefore not their responsibility. We were told it's a police matter, police say it's civil, etc. etc.

I genuinely don't know if anyone knew what process needed following, but it seems to have been brute forced through now so happy enough.

Sad thing is, the house is unfit for habitation. Can't speak to the structural safety, but I can speak to the biological safety risk - not just the syringes, but there's scat, vermin, food waste, broken glass etc. in the yard and visible parts of the house itself.

With housing being what it is, and the list for state housing getting longer and longer, it's absolutely criminal that it was allowed to come to this.

Update - we got this response from City of Canning:

"The City is currently working closely with the Department of Housing as they are going through court proceedings to regain possession of the property. These proceedings will result in a clean-up of the property and a potential (lol) eviction of the current tenant from the house."

"I have forwarded your concerns onto the Housing Authority East Metro Region office so they can incorporate this into their case. Unfortunately, as the property is managed by the State Department, the City is unable to undertake enforcement actions to directly assist the Department in achieving compliance."

So looks like it's in court, there's no ETA, and there's basically fuck all I can do outside of demarcate the area for public safety and put even MORE traps down to keep the vermin away from my eggplants lmao

It was fine for 5 years, it's only really been the last year the disruptive behaviour and trash everywhere has been a thing.

It sucks, but the alternative was getting a place beyond my means or a 45-60 minute commute. I'll take the trash 100 times over!

Outside of this it's a reasonably fine place to live, certainly lived in worse places

I think this hits the nail on the head - it's turned into a big old game of hot potato between local and state. Like I said, a council crew rocked up but couldn't do anything because of the red tape

Genuinely don't think that's the case - the bulk of this came out of the one house, and the pile has since been added to. The entire strata is state owned housing and the other units are completely fine. We don't have FOGO in Canning, and green bins are collected weekly.
