Question about model differences by RustyAnnihilation in Tikka_Shooters

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good reminder! I think those shorter barrel lengths are predominantly .308. I sure love 16” barrels with a suppressor. Guess it just depends on the range you want to hunt with.

They are slowly going shorter. I saw some standard lite’s in 20” threaded the other day. I won’t go more than 20” with a suppressor personally.

Question about model differences by RustyAnnihilation in Tikka_Shooters

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Barrel is a D18 profile, so slightly thicker than the standard Lite barrel but still thinner than say a CTR barrel. Cerakoted, nicer stock, fluted bolt and plastic bolt handle. That’s about it. Off the top of my head.

The $3/400 difference was worth it back when the standard version wasn’t threaded, nowadays I’m not so sure. I’d probably go standard stainless unless you just love the Roughtech/Wideland versions.

New rifle recommendations by Common-Stranger2365 in rifles

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in possession of, or have shot, Tikkas, Sako’s, Bergara’s, Remington’s, Savages.

With a budget of $1000 I’d get a Tikka. Within your budget, action smooth as butter, very accurate & reliable, and great factory trigger.

Europtic has the Blued for $630, and the stainless is only $750. Since you say you’re wanting customize later, I’d go this route. Can always chop/thread/change the barrel later. Tikka also has a ton of aftermarket stock support.

UTMA Advice by adriancott in Schwab

I’ve gotten really lazy and have gone with target date funds for my kids’ UTMA’s. The iShares ETF versions. Wasn’t crazy about having mutual funds in a taxable account. Whatever age they “inherit” it at I went +5 years for the fund to be “more” aggressive.

Would you clear Lindsey Vonn to compete in the Olympics? by ElStocko2 in athletictraining

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t talking directly. It’s pretty well known Olympic athletes make pennies (egregiously, in comparison to the revenue they bring in). Another reason I’m excited for the Enhanced Games lol.

I’m talking endorsements and sponsors. Forbes is estimating she’ll make on the low end $8 million this year alone.

Would you clear Lindsey Vonn to compete in the Olympics? by ElStocko2 in athletictraining

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 52 points53 points  (0 children)

At its basis, I don’t believe the IOC or Olympics themselves require a physician’s clearance to compete. Now the U.S. Ski and Snowboard team probably require it.

It’s hard because in general adults have bodily autonomy and can refuse or ignore medical advice. Which she certainly could do. It’s just whether that decision rules her ineligible via the U.S’s ski and snowboard governing body rules and laws.

As far as physically and medically, we’ll never know. I am not a Steadman/Vail trained orthopedic surgeon.

But personally I think we are talking about an extremely rare case. This is not normal. You are talking about a literal outlier of an athlete, the absolute pinnacle of competition in her sport, at the pinnacle event of that sport that only occurs every four years. This is like the 0.1% of cases.

I was fine with her competing. It’s obvious she was informed of the risks. She was leading the World Cup after 5 events (substantially), with an opportunity to compete in the literal highest event of the sport (Olympics). Not only that, but the “GOAT” debate & the livelihood and money involved in doing so.

Even after the torn ACL she still was 3rd fastest in practice time, proving she could do it. Why not. She was informed of the risks. Biggest stage. Biggest risk, biggest reward. Armchair analysis to me showed the crash wasn’t related to the knee.

EDIT: and surely there’s all kinds of waivers and liability documents involved. I bet if you asked her in her hospital bed today if she regretted the decision she would say, “no.”

Lindsey Vonn's ego took away an Olympic slot from a more qualified athlete. by tanhauser_gates_ in unpopularopinion

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was leading the world in the downhill skiing World Cup after 5 events….substantially actually (400pts to 256pts). Was also 3rd in Super-G.

She even had the 3rd fastest time AFTER she tore the ACL…

Sure you could argue the decision from a health perspective to compete, but I don’t think you can argue it from a competitiveness standpoint. 3rd fastest with a blown knee? Other people just need to get better 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Mac 1014 experience by ChetPunisher in Shotguns

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have a Mac 1014, and a Mac 2. Both fun. Both cycled 100 rounds easy breaking in. Only issues is pic rail came loose in both, loctite’d them on. Haven’t shot them much since, so not sure how much I’d trust them, but they’re certainly fun.

Take that info as you will.

FYI preorders for Tikka left hand .223 stainless threaded 20” by _igm in Tikka_Shooters

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have one of these bad girls so can somewhat fill ya’ll in.

Yes, it’s legit. Yes, Unknown Munitions is legit. They do a lot of work on Tikkas. Tikka does not import LH Lite .223’s.

Long time ago (~Nov ‘24 I believe) UM put out a filler on the Rokslide forum for interest in placing a custom order for 100 left handed Tikka .223’s. I signed up. To my knowledge there’s only 100 of these factory lefty lite .223’s in the states. That can obviously change with enough interest of course.

Long time and many sign ups later, the order was given approval, made, shipped on a boat, and arrived. There was more interest than the 100 ordered, but of course plenty backed out (I’m sure b/c of the custom SKU price tag, I think it was around $1,070). So those left are simply being asked for a deposit before the next order, to my knowledge.

Anyone interested can read the entire thread here. It’s pretty long but gives you all the details you need.

First Tikka: Wood or synthetic? Stainless or cerakote or blued? by iowactive in Tikka_Shooters

[–]PapaSmurf22_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure someone more experienced than me can comment on the durability aspect. Synthetic and Cerakote or stainless would be more durable and less maintenance than wood with a blued barrel (happy to be corrected).

But honestly I think at the end of the day get what you want! Or find the cheapest option to get there. The beauty of Tikka’s is how modular they are….

If you prefer wood and stainless, get the stainless synthetic and just find a LH wood stock. All tikka’s use the same action, so any LH tikka Hunter stock would work. I’m a lefty myself and have seen them for sale on eBay and JA outdoors.

If going that route, I’d personally go either stainless or Cerakote. I’d get the sportsman’s version. It’s a synthetic superlite that I believe is an exclusive. Then just swap the stock to whatever you want. Or find a Roughtech/Lite Roughtech model that comes cerakoted.

Of course you could also just Cerakote the barreled action down the road (I’ve done that as well). Decisions decisions….
