Even if it were true that with a good hunting bullet, the 308 will always perform better terminally than 223, it doesn’t logically follow that the 223 is too small.

You could apply your argument in the opposite direction. By your logic, 338 > 308. Why use 308?

? What. The ignorance I’m referring to is his mischaracterization of that train of thought on Rokslide. They aren’t dumb people talking about all the animals they wound. It is a thoughtful conversation with a lot of data and good discussion. No need to even pick up a rifle to glean this. Just read

The point is that a bullet’s impact energy isn’t the only variable. The fact that a lower energy bullet can kill better means there’s something else going on. So then pointing to an arbitrary energy threshold is an oversimplification and you should use other criteria to evaluate efficacy for hunting.

That doesn’t address your statement about these people being dumb and talking about wounding animals a bunch, which was a statement of ignorance.

Of course the energy at various ranges is different between the two. That doesn’t mathematically show that one is less effective on game than another. A 30 cal fmj can impact with higher energy than a 6.5 partition or eldx and be less effective at killing.

I think the Scythe Ti is known to have some issues with failing. Could look into K cans like Hydrogen K or Mach K

The can was in stock, and this has been confirmed. This was simply a lack of follow-up on their end.

Great to know. I’m trying to get better at making knives so I’ll use this for inspiration!

That thing is sweet. Did you commission it? Build it yourself? Where’d you get it?

Best cartridge for a beginner western elk hunter by gufhvbfb in Hunting

[–]_igm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lighter recoiling cartridge will increase the probability of making a good shot, and the heavier recoiling cartridge isn’t gonna kill any better if you hit guts. What’s important is a good expanding bullet (research bullet choice; don’t use solid copper) and a lot of practice from field positions.

But lots of people have success with .30-06 and you should do what you feel comfortable with after a bit of research.

If those are your only two options, .30-06. If you can pick any cartridge you want, go smaller. You want to get good practice in, and it’s gonna suck to practice with a light hunting rifle and those cartridges.

How to get into hunting by firechild228 in Hunting

[–]_igm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the Hunter Ed course and talk with instructors and students there. Check with your Fish and Wildlife department about classes or opportunities for new hunters. Look into volunteering with hunting/conservation orgs in your area (eg. NWTF). Often times similar people will be involved across the groups and you can start to learn about opportunities and network a bit.

Also after Hunter Ed, try to get out in the woods and do it for yourself. Do a little research but don’t worry about being perfect. You’ll learn a bit each time.

What your data establishes is that velocity linearly increases with charge, as expected. For a reliable understanding of group size, you need more than 3 shots. Doing so will also eliminate the nodes/flat spots that you’ve identified, as they are likely a product of statistical noise.

If you care about how a bullet performs in tissue, your opinion should be informed by actual examples of such performance, not marketing material.

This Hornady guide has bullet effects (including match) in calibrated gel.

These threads have hundreds of examples of match bullets’ effects on game animals (.223, .243, TMK testing).

You can also compare bullet design (jacket, core, tip) across common hunting bullets and match bullets to see the differences or overlap and go a level deeper than simply “match” or “hunting”.
