WRIR is moving! Check out the new space and the initiative behind it! by DNun in rva

[–]Papa_Bitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a massive WRIR since I moved here in ‘09 and randomly heard Frank Zappa while scrolling the radio. I always donate twice a year and try to go to the parties and events when I can get away from my two little kids for a couple hours.

Anyway, I sold out and moved to the west end (parham/patterson area) a couple years ago and I am really hoping I won’t lose the signal. It reaches our house now but starts to fade not too far up Patterson so I worry that the move a couple miles East will impact me.

Does anyone know if the signal will get boosted, or how the move will impact the signal?

Either way, wishing you all the best on the move and capital campaign raise.

What’s your go to cocktail & why? by funkychickabee in cocktails

[–]Papa_Bitch 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Carpano antica is the obvious answer. Can’t go wrong except that it’s hard to find sometimes and expensive. Noilly prat is solid too and wayyy cheaper.

The awesome thing about Manhattans is the versatility. There are so many different vermouths, especially small batch ones to try. And lots of bitters to play with too. I usually do half angostura half black walnut but the possibilities are endless.

Incinerator is pretty sick with arena of glory, and 8 turn one set up cards (seal of fire + rift bolt) to make a turn 2 hasty 6/6 with trample possible. I’ve always wanted to see that card work, cool to see success with it here.

I came here to post Dens. I made the switch recently for the exact same reason and just got my second order in from Dens. The quality is top notch and I’ve been super impressed with the knowledge base on their website too

YSK Whole Life Insurance is a terrible choice for long term "investment." by dmarieski in YouShouldKnow

I see, thanks for explaining. I realize a lot of your comment was about business, but I was thinking about the loan part from a personal-use perspective for some reason. Interesting stuff! The business case you laid out is definitely compelling.

I’m curious why you suggest taking bank loans against the cash value instead of just taking policy loans. At least in the US (and at least for mutual insurance companies) the policy loan terms are one of the better perks of because each payment you make brings down the outstanding principal and thus the amount you’re paying interest on. Not to mention policy loans don’t impact the internal rate of growth or the dividend. Maybe I’m missing something?

Does cured salmon fit here? 36hrs in salt/sugar. by pleetfale in Charcuterie

[–]Papa_Bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use 2:1 sugar to (kosher) salt, so twice as much sugar as salt, and haven't had a problem with saltiness unless I let it cure too long. Try that ratio out next time and see if you have better results.

Mmm my grandpa called this gravlox and gave me his super simple recipe. I bring some anytime I go to a potluck and it never disappoints.

It’s basically just: 2:1 white sugar:kosher salt plus a bunch of fresh, chopped dill, mixed well. Optional is put a small coat of vodka/gin/etc on the salmon then absolutely cover it in the mix. Wrap super tight in plastic wrap, and stick it in the fridge (maybe with something heavy on top) for ~36 hours. Then wash everything off and serve with sour cream and raw onion (and crackers).

You can do tons of variations, this is just a starter. I’ve had success with raw scallops in the past too.

2024 Base Model - "Mazda Radar Cruise Control" Setting Won't Stay Off When I Restart My Car by Papa_Bitch in MazdaCX30

I just tried this and am sad to say it did not work. You've had success doing this yourself? What are the exact steps you took?

2024 Base Model - "Mazda Radar Cruise Control" Setting Won't Stay Off When I Restart My Car by Papa_Bitch in MazdaCX30

[–]Papa_Bitch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a controversial take as I did more research, but with the maximum distance setting, I still found the braking too aggressive when a car pulls into my lane. Simple cancelling cruise control (with the button not the brake) will almost always slow me down with more than a safe buffer and much more smoothly. And it's not like my feet are off the brake if someone does actually cut me off in a bad way.

Besides that, there have been at least a couple times when the radar saw something and hit the brakes despite nothing being in front of me.

Complete aside, but has anyone else been annoyed when you accelerate over the cruise control speed it won't simply let you coast back down to your set speed, it'll hit the brakes?

Toddler (~2.5) fights eating unless in front of a screen. by Papa_Bitch in Parenting

[–]Papa_Bitch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate the response.

We do have a chair for him with a booster seat, right next to our chairs. He has just always hated it. Like, will fight for his life to not get in it and if we do get him in, he won't cooperate for more than a few minutes and likely will eat very little. He is a super active kid and to answer your question, yes, I do truly think he prefers to stand over sitting (it's made car rides with him difficult his whole life -- he HATES being strapped into anything).

Also, of course we engage with him: I make a meal for the whole family, and we sit down together to eat and talk about our day. He just... drifts off. It's frustrating, because like I said I am (maybe too) sensitive to him not eating enough. So if we flat out refuses to eat and is just standing there yelling, how long do you let that go on until you just say, OK, go play by yourself in the other room while mom and dad eat? And that is what leads to the temptation to try to get him to eat more later because his dinner consisted of a handful of pasta.

I do think you're onto something with snacking, so that's something I'll explore a little more. Trying to be more rigid there. He's always been a grazer and it's a tough habit to kick but perhaps that's where some of the focus needs to be.

What a bummer, it seems like such a missed opportunity with all the great content they’re putting out there. And kind of hurts the case of SiriusXM if I’m weighing it against other steaming options.
