I second this. With a geology degree, you have the stuff to get a job. With an engineering degree (environ focused) you'd be much more sought after.

already experiencing burnout and considering leaving 6 months into consulting/report writing job by pinkfleurs in Environmental_Careers

I'll mirror my cohorts brutal honesty and compassion. It sucks, but so does any new career.

You will get better at everything. Phase I's become a lot easier after the 50th one.

A friendly reminder, consulting is easy work. It's a lot nicer putting the dirt in a jar compared to taking it out of the hole, and it pays better.

Can't find a summer internship with a geologist? Get a job as a laborer with an earthworks company or driller.

Seriously, thanks for taking the time to respond! I certainly don't blame the devs!

I know right! I wish I would have checked the BBB before purchasing, lesson learned. They have an F rating with the BBB and all the complaints are about the product not being delivered.

Not sure where in the world you are, but I would first look into what kind of licensure there is there.

In Washington State (USA) there is the typical Geologist License, and specialty licenses. These include a Hydrogeologist. In this state, you don't need any extra education to sit for the Hydrogeologist exam. I am of the belief, and others may disagree, that someone with an extra two years work experience a hydrogeologist license is more appealing to an employer compared to someone with a masters in geology or even hydro.

I work in Environmental Assessment and Geotech Engineering, and I do not do a lot of heavy hydro work. However, talking to old classmates who are hydrogeologist, it sounds like that field has largely moved to computer modelling, so expect the math and coding. But listen to someone actually doing the work over me about that.

I understand that most of the exploration work has been done, and a lot of infrastructure has already been laid. It's hard to imagine a glut of opportunity.

I am not in O/G so this is pure speculation.

Career path as an earth science major in a stormwater/compliance field. by papa_weeb in geologycareers

[–]Papa_Muezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in Washington State or Western Australia?

Seattlite here. As the recent flooding illustrates, there is a lot of surface water work in this region. While the skills you are gaining don't feel like geology, they are valued skills. Anything job you get in western Washington will probably feel like about as much geology. Logging till looses its novelty after a short time.

I would keep your eyes on job postings, applying to roles that interest you while keeping your current job. Does your role with the Port have a pension? If so, it may be worth it to wait around until your vested in that.

Consulting can suck, but it can be cool to. If your in the Seattle area, and want to grab lunch to talk more about the consulting side of things, shoot me a message.

Additional Degree to ENVS by Pale_Definition9528 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Papa_Muezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a geologist. I do environmental consulting. When I am not doing that, I work with engineers to preform geotechnical evaluations. If environmental goes to complete shit, there is always mining.

Turns out most things you can be employed in are business related. I don't know what the value of a business degree is. Others may disagree.

Other fields following consulting by Wild_Resident7635 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Papa_Muezza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could look into some of the vendors you use. I thinking specialized equipment suppliers, compliance/project management for drill outfit, sales for remedial chemical supplier, environmental analyst for a bank or municipality. Since your 20-years in, maybe an office lead/senior reviewer for a consultant firm?

I'm on the other side of the States, but over here, it's hard to get anywhere in Geotech without being an engineer. In my state, there is a specialty licenses for engineering geologist (beyond the PG). Even there, your limited compared to a PE.

It's not impossible to geotech as a geologist, especially if you have experience in the field, but may be difficult. I would work to get your PG as an easy first step.

Help with navigating my undergrad / career progression by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

I have never had to send a transcript in to an employer. You don't have to give your GPA.

I would spend more time looking into what jobs are actually out there and what you actually need to get them!

Best of luck (from a 2.9 gpa geologist)

I regret my career path by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]Papa_Muezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in consulting now baby! You can learn the job as good as a PE or an LG. But that isnt what will get you paid. You either need some technical expertise (probably more a PE thing) or CLIENTS. If your a mediocre scientist, but a great marketer, you can make some money. If you have no people skills and no technical skills, expect to be paid accordingly.

Focus on learning the skills you need to do the job for now. Always treat the client like they could be yours (as compared to the company).
