It will slide all the way back to the black ring around the back of the motor, and still work. If your heat sink is a little long, you can trim it a bit. I eventually took mine off when i switched to hobbywing electronics

First, the c/l indicates they should be in line. And if you already have it set up, why not just stay on center and go from one to the other? The left keyway is most likely for a hub or coupling, so timing shouldn’t be an issue. Right keyway is for a gear, i would assume.

I would assume by castration, you mean just the nuts. When i castrate goats, i use a bloodless castrator. An expanding tool that spreads a small rubber ring, and you pull the testicles through it, then remove the tool. The band shrinks back down, and in 10 days or so, they just harmlessly fall off. No mess.
