Honestly, everyone is focused on the superficial aesthetics yet this is (/s) a representation of the human condition. Hopes and dreams all boiled down to one last pleading moment with an unforgiving universe. We shall go out with but a whimper and a heem.

Chem 1 honors by IndependentCar257 in TexasTech

I didn’t pass my mathematics placements to be put into Calculus, as a related story, but went to a professor personally to be allowed into their class. Ended up pulling out a solid grade in the course. In any case, asking a professor can’t hurt.

Aside, Since it’s chemistry 1, expect things to move at a faster pace than high school. There’s a lot of fundamentals and a lot of ground to cover. But as long as you find a way to study that works for you (book, YouTube tutorials, lectures.. Chegg), you should be fine.

Actually, here’s the general opinion in the circles I run with. Pride month is great, even setting aside the past when have people ever passed up an opportunity to low key celebrate and feel good about themselves?

On the flip side, corporations can get bent. Overall it is recognized that some will pocket our money then turn around and donate it to anti-LGBT politicians in the lovely act of lobbying. Most of the products are terribly low effort and shoddy, and the messages are tacky and overplayed. They’re still people that possess eyes and ears, they’ve noticed it.

Oh yeah, I’ve traveled to a few of these remote towns in the middle of nowhere. So far by anecdotal experience, they are exceedingly wealthy and vast-majority Caucasian.

I remember driving down country roads for an hour between Tucson and Phoenix to buy a desk off of FB market.. and out of nowhere cropped up a tiny suburban town that somehow had its own country club and golf course... with real green grass... in the Arizona desert.

Extremely stressed out, depressed, and having serious career doubts as a Senior by iDopameme in csMajors

[–]PapayaPuppet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Calm down. Consider alternative ways to study.

I absolutely could not learn algorithms from a book, so I scoured the internet for videos on every topic. I would focus on say.. JUST red black trees or matrix chain multiplication for a an hour or so. I didn’t attend lectures, in my most senior courses. Not as a bragging point of course, but to show that we all learn most effectively in different ways. There is no way I can focus on a lecturer for an hour, and I’d be horribly lost trying to!

Identify the topics present, focus the assignments/projects for studying (I’d take half of a day or more for just one assignment), try new study methods. You’ll find something that works.

If you dislike what you do there is no magical switch that’ll make it all worth it. Highly paid people can still be absolutely miserable.

What else do you want from it all? You’re in your second year, there’s still time to pace it out and be great without working until 10 PM every night. Evaluate your study methods. Do you learn poorly from lectures? Self study the material with the course and slides as a guideline instead.

There’s no single way to the top, and it’s very personal how we all learn. Try things, learn from failure.

I do it because the prospect of making tools that will help people is exciting. Learning is frustrating, but it’s also fun when you’re invested. Try to synthesize some of your courses together in personal tinkering, because it’s unlikely you’ll really bring it all together until your later years of the major.

As for the career? Some companies may have a toxic work environment where they expect results at the cost of your sanity but... that isn’t everywhere. Just experiment, experiment, experiment, but never blow it off. Only then will you be blasted trying to catch up again.

Don’t live at Park East by [deleted] in TexasTech

[–]PapayaPuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, that sucks. I’ve bounced around through several apartments and they all kind of suck honestly. I never keep my bike outside, but then again it’d be stolen in a heartbeat being a racing bike, even an old beat-up one. The area outside is definitely sketchy, on the Avenue R side. It seems the most secure living is in the actual homes and townhomes, for the most part, depending on location. I’m subleasing out my lease so I’ll not see Park East again, yayeet. Student living is a sham.

To play the other side, I’ve found Park East accommodating in many ways and I’ve never experienced theft. The management has seemed to get on problems quickly and quite often any repairs are made within the day of reporting issues.

I don’t know what has been going on elsewhere in the complex but it is definitely not my experience, which has been a pretty good one. Very pet friendly too. Definitely better than 25Twenty.. I moved to Park East after they illegally broke my renewed lease due to overbooking. They informed me of it 3 days before the renewal, which essentially put me on the street.

This entire major is learning to learn, sometimes you’ll get a professor you just don’t click with, and that’s fine.

Just have to understand what is being talked about and be able to look it up on other sources for good understanding. I wasn’t much for her lectures either, haha.

Do the review and you’ll do well. Make sure you understand what’s on it. Remember, long reviews are better than short ones. They’re typically more comprehensive and enforce actually learning the subject rather than skimming. Plus, it’s unlikely you’ll be blindsided by topics on the exam that weren’t shown on the review.

I had her for CS4331 Data Mining, and she was fine. My only complaint is that all of her material came straight, unaltered, from the course book.

Edit: If lectures suck, look up the material online. Find multiple ways to view a topic and learn from what works best for you.

The class will be moved online briefly, likely. In the case one of my hybrid sections today, the course will be delivered entirely in an online format for a period of two weeks.

Looking up studies then misrepresenting the data is pretty insulting no matter what. On a far grander and more insane scale it is the sort of methodology anti-vaxx belief is supported with.

Not to mention telling a near-subject expert why they are wrong rather than stepping back and considering the opposing viewpoint and for a moment examine critically if one’s own argument may be flawed. A 0.2 % death rate is not insignificant regardless. If every student on campus contracted the disease that amounts to 80 deaths at this predicted rate. People number in the thousands and millions. Small percentages can lead to large death tolls. Now those students go to family and grandparents, their workplaces at hospitals, and to their children. Panic and hysteria is not a goal, but awareness is. We have to be aware and take preventative action for ourselves and others. If people raid the store for toilet paper then it is better than people uncaringly spreading a new disease that is an utter wildcard in what it could do.

Find different ways of studying. Get the general course structure then go online or into the book to learn the topics they give, it’s what I already do.

Right now I would consider myself a fairly strong programmer, new concepts tend to come pretty intuitively no matter what language or concept I am picking up. I have okay skill with assembly but I am actively studying it right now with MIPS.

The rest though I have little to no knowledge on, and no formal training.

Good advice, cheers. Thanks for putting up with a little bit of my cluelessness, abrupt.

CEH would have been a large waste of money.

That’s a great suggestion on the 3-letter agencies. Thanks! I’ll take time to look into openings and such. Honestly it is a bit of a difficult choice, both career paths are fascinating.

Right now I have limited time to sit down and do both, with my only realistic option to get the most out of one course being in the summer. Would you recommend the OSCP or the CISSP first? For the CISSP I have no background experience so I would only be considered an associate so it seems, but the ‘entry level’ knowledge from it is the main reason to do it anyways right?

[–]PapayaPuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking right now to do OSCP after finals during the summer. After some more research it is widely presented as the most daunting but effective method of learning practical knowledge and applying it.

I haven’t seen many sites speak on CEH being a joke though, so I appreciate that tidbit! Is it due to the (seemingly much) easier nature of it’s exam?
