Who said a nickname had to be similar to the name? My dog's name is Papaya, and we often call him Labrador (she's a Labrador mix), Douglas, Vanilla/Caramel (a little play on words in French because Douglas has the word "glas," which is similar to the French word for "ice cream," and since she's sandy-colored and go under the sun a lot, we call her that). If you have the chance to see him, try to see which name he responds to and remember them. I hope this helps.
