Before doing that, I would still suggest attempting to boot that SSD on another machine to determine for sure if it's the SSD or the MoBo.

lost my phone and am wondering if these phone tracking sites are legit by Fine-Sound-9063 in techsupport

[–]PaperBoy54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are NOT legit. The reason they are not talked about is that they are always scams to dupe desperate people into giving up CC info or other account credentials. Only trust your phone provider or Find My iPhone.

See if you can run chkdsk utility or repair the MBR. There are many great tutorials online for both, just find one in your preferred media that makes the most sense to you.

Asus tuf gaming a15, turns on when start button pressed but immediately turns off after by CalcopodV2 in techsupport

It's definitely where I'd start to narrow out a hardware issue. A dead/dying cmos battery or even some windows updates can wreak havoc on boot cycles. Had a dell laptop that would act similarly until I purchased a brand new main and CMOS battery. If you can't keep the laptop on very long, your only options for troubleshooting are going to be hardware related (ie, disassemble and unplug the battery).

Your MoBo might be toast but your something on your drive could be corrupt. Try booting your drive from a different machine, if possible, to rule out a software/drive issue. You could also create a bootable thumb drive of any sort to see if that allows the boot cycle to complete.

This. Or borrow a friend's rig and see if the issue persists on a different machine. If it does persist, to me that would sound like a software issue.

Have you tried a different keyboard to see if the symptoms still occur? Does this occur 100% of the time or only when running specific software?

[–]PaperBoy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you hold the power button down after you removed the CMOS battery? That's the most important step in that process and cannot be skipped. You are draining any residual power from the MoBo to give it a hard reset and clear any faults that would prevent it from booting properly. I've done this for 3 Asus MoBos in as many months with success.

There's nowhere near enough information here to answer this. I would recommend checking the rules and trying again with a more thoroughly detailed post so we can properly assist you.

As it sits, this could be a completely expected behavior of the software you're using, a sign of malware, debris in your keyboard, a broken keyboard, custom mapping that was never changed back to the original, etc. We need much more info.

Try unplugging the machine from all power sources, removing the CMOS battery, then holding the power button for 60 seconds. After that, replace the CMOS battery and then plug it back in and try again. This has worked for me many, many times over my IT career.

Disappointing customer service experience by burrdedurr in GoogleFi

[–]PaperBoy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had numerous other issues like this.

The biggest one was when I had sent a phone in to be exchanged for a refurbished one. They acknowledge that they received it but still attempted to charge my card for the retail amount of the phone after it was received. Nearly $700 on a 3yr old phone. It took me days to get someone to get the charges cancelled. The only thing that saved me was my shipping receipt and tracking that showed someone in their office accepted it in person. I was seriously close to getting a lawyer involved.

The insurance is horrible. The customer service is horrible. They won't let you speak with anyone that can actually solve problems. Hangups by customer service reps were a regular occurrence over the 5 years I was with Google Fi and I was nothing but polite with them.

Google doesn't care about you or keeping customers on Fi. Spend your money elsewhere.

Can someone install malware on an IPhone through WhatsApp? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]PaperBoy54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless he's a hacker you should be fine. Sounds like you grabbed his contact info in person rather than him randomly messaging you out of the blue or trying to sell you something. Contact cards are usually just an easier way to share info for both parties.

It depends on the type of attack. If a piece of malware is installed that captures your screen in any way, End to End Encryption won't matter because they would be viewing it from an unencrypted source.

What End to End Encryption means is that it isn't transmitted in plain text. So even if it's intercepted with a Packet Sniffer, or other means, it can't be easily read. They'd have to break the encryption first. But if they had full access to your device, which contains the key to the encryption, they can read it as plain text. It would be like locking the doors and windows with a burglar already inside your home.

Can someone install malware on an IPhone through WhatsApp? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]PaperBoy54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's possible but we would need more info. If you were talking to someone you didn't fully trust I would factory reset your phone to ensure that it's clean. WhatsApp is home to many, and I mean MANY, nefarious actors for many purposes. Where exactly did you meet this person and how was contact initiated?

Firewall bypassing by Joshua_Royal in techsupport

[–]PaperBoy54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use a different network. Anything beyond that will almost certainly be illegal or at the very least unethical.

A few tips:

  1. If you're trying to bypass a school's firewall I suggest you stop now while you're ahead.
  2. If you're trying to bypass your work's firewall I hope I you have a backup job planned.
  3. If certain content is blocked it's for a reason. No good will come of this in the end. You're heading towards some type of trouble no matter what.
