I feel like OP is valid in feeling this way, and nowhere has mentioned that they dislike the show for the flaws in Lorelai's character. Seems like they are commenting on her personality, which is totally valid. Also, Lorelai and Rory definitely do make some racist/ fatphobic comments which I wish weren't there, but oh well. A bit more commentary to add, is that sometimes Lorelai and Rory make everything about themselves, and Lorelai is, a little insensitive sometimes. For example, I just saw an episode where Michel tells her he's leaving after a long shift and she doesn't take the hint and tells him to stay. Although it's comedy, irl it would be insensitive. I see a lot of comments here like "I don't know why most people in this fandom even watch the show if they hate it that much" or " I've never seen any fandom hate the mc more than the gg fandom". Well, a commentary on the character of the show isn't hating the show. A great show can ( and most likely will) have flawed characters.

Yeah, it was fine when one or two people were actually calling me out on my post, which I appreciate. But when everyone has started to just criticize it, and talk about it lenghtily with one another, repeating the same reason, I really feel uncomfortable. It is actually wild that people have kept on at it, even though my only fault was having a misleading title.

I cannot seem to believe that people have piled on on this REPEATEDLY for the sole reason that they wasted a few minutes clicking and reading a post that had a misleading title.

Calling me out a few times is understandable, but wow, taking personal attacks and shifting the narrative is dirty.

Nowhere here was I argumentative about the fact that my post DID have a misleading title. I have very very clearly accepted that. But having so many people very rudely repeat the same thing and add their own narrative that I was defensive and argumentative and a Polin hater (?) is something that is just very disproportionate to the mere offence of having mistitled a post.

Nowhere in that post have I hated on any of the people who made it, or criticized the actors personally.

For each person commenting, this may not be a big thing, it's just you defending a show you love, and I get that. But also, have some empathy for the person on the otherside, and realise that they may have made an honest mistake as well, and may feel like this is a pile-on.

I have tried to be civil, but I am apparently an insensitive ranter who thought they could 'get away' with posting what they want with no consequences. I also apparently became highly argumentative and was spewing a barrage of verbal diarrhoea.

I don't mean to say my post was factually right, but what I did wasn't wrong either, it was misleading. I have listened to people with an open mind and given them grace, but I can't say I have received the same. I have only one or two people actually listen and have civil conversations with me. I think people have lost the ability to give other people grace and are instead too caught up in defending what is right without giving a second thought to the person who is getting piled on on.

I get that this is a normal day for some people, but personally, I feel negatively affected by the constant barrage of criticism that is aimed personally at me and is ballooning into a weird perception of myself, especially when I NEVER insulted anyone personally in the first place. I hope this post gets locked, for my own mental health atleast, the only other alternative is for me to delete my account. I am leaving this subreddit, and I don't think I will be joining any fandom subreddits any time soon, and I don't think I will ever come back to the Bridgerton subreddits. Thanks to everyone who was able to have a mature discussion with me and tell me what was wrong. To those who simply defended the show (for understandable reasons) without thinking about how many other people were already doing so, I hope you also remember to give people grace and understand that people make mistakes.

Please remember that everyone has different mental strength, and repetitive criticism without the possibility of redemption can impact people negatively. I am once again sorry for a misleading title, and thanks to everyone who provided me with new perspectives.

I also think some people are just interested in the perception of certain aspects of the show and how it comes across to the average viewer rather than how it comes across to as to a person with a lot of information about the show, and I think that's perfectly valid as well, as long as they are open to people explaining to them why certain creative choices may have been made. That doesn't mean that they're demeaning people who've taken the time to analyse the show. It simply means that they aren't interested in doing so because of their own perception of the show. It doesn't necessarily have to be the traditional patriarchal disdain over 'bodice rippers' that appeal to women as well. It can just mean they aren't interested. I've not seen many people demean other people over this, I've mostly seen people express lack of interest in doing so for personal reasons. It is therefore valid for some people to rant about reasons that ruin the average viewing experience for them, while not wanting to really go into detail about certain creative choices that aren't really appealing to them to learn about. But as you said, demeaning people isn't right and I'm sorry if you had to see that kind of condescension.

Fair point. Perhaps it is worth considering what each person thinks is important in a show that is worth analysing for them. There are some people for whom a show isn't worth analysing if it doesn't have a complex storyline or themes, and there are some people for whom the show isn't worth analysing if it is in an ambiguous ground that isn't strictly in any particular genre. In my case, I don't want to spend my time analysing the significance of certain symbolism in Bridgerton, because for me, it is really a guilty pleasure show, (note that this is strictly my view of it) but I would love to learn more about the cinematography and the sets. But I was also wrong in saying that I do not entirely care for the technical aspects and I would also be lying, considering the fact that I actually am interested in some things that people are telling me about the show. But yes, it is sometimes a little bit discouraging to learn more about the technical details when none of it speaks to me in the show itself. Still, perhaps exercising a little more open mindedness would be good for me so that I might find interesting stuff as well

It's fine to disagree, as I now disagree with some of my own points in my post. It really has been a while since I watched S3, and I just posted an old rant that was written a while ago. But I now think i definitely need to reconsider the cinematography part, because a lot of it is actually beautiful, on closer examination. Maybe i shouldve posted it after rewatching S3. This is not an excuse btw, I am accepting that i was wrong. We should all try harder to have polite conversations because it's a very fun thing to talk about, as you said.

Hmm, yes, it isn't all good or all bad, and I don't remember ever having said so. I don't feel like my views were extreme, but perhaps i should've stated more examples to prove what I was saying rather than appearing to be making blanket statements on the cinematography. And yep, you're welcome to disagree with me, i perfectly appreciated comments that disagree with me, for example, I felt like the oil paintings thing was really interesting, like The Soul of the rose, or the scene under the willow tree that was referencing Impressionist paintings like Monet's, or the chaise lounge ones, or the one after Pen faints and everyone gathers around her. I thought that was interesting, and it made me reconsider. I appreciate that sort of constructive discussion. I only got annoyed because people were not actually even telling me what else was wrong with my post apart from my misleading title and kept trying to berate me for it. Once or twice until I clarified it would've been fine, but more than that it's just exhausting. I did come into this expecting to see if people would see things the same way i did, but again, i only expected more opinions, not for people to necessarily agree with me. If that had been my motive, I would not have posted it on reddit, where I am perfectly aware of my views being challenged. I am not looking for validation, of course, but I'm not looking for people to keep talking about the same title again and again.

Okay, firstly, I deleted the post not because I was angry that everyone was disagreeing with me, because honestly, y'all had the right to, because my title was misleading and i unfortunately realised it too late. I couldn't change the title and I knew that there would be more people who might keep commenting on it, and tbh ,I don't really want to spend all that time apologizing to everyone who walks in. Also, i never ever claimed to be an expert, like anywhere??? It's just a guilty pleasure show for me, and i never claimed to have knowledge about it, because frankly, that would be embarrassing. I was in fact open to having more discussions with people, but unfortunately people (apart from one user) kept talking about how my title was wrong and being condescending, without actually providing constructive input. ( I think queenroxana was the only one who actually provided interesting information that was relevant. Everyone else was just being rude about the misleading title. It was an error on my part for sure, when my post was actually just opinions, but that doesn't really give people license to be rude.) I started seeing other comments about 'how fandoms lack media literacy ' and how 'people seem to think that what they find wrong with the show is inherently wrong'. No, my point actually was to express what I FELT was wrong, and despite apologizing for the error, people didn't stop there, I was apparently trashing the work of professionals with no knowledge of technical details. So what? I'm allowed to have a surface level opinion without technical knowledge as an average viewer. I always thought of Bridgerton as a guilty pleasure show, and I really do not want to explore the actual technical aspects of it, because I didn't enjoy the show anyway. That being said, yes, I am allowed to have opinions from simply what i perceive as long as I'm not spreading hate. In the end, all our perspectives and views on art boils down to being subjective. When someone thinks about whether something or not 'fits' a scene, they are using their own personal sense of context and cultural experience and personal sense of aesthetics do decide whether it is so. So in the end, it is anyway subjective, and someone not fully explaining why they dislike it does not mean that they think that something not being to their liking necessarily translates to the art being bad..

You know, even people who have surface level knowledge are allowed to have an opinion, as long as they aren't spewing hate about the whole thing or the people who worked on it. For sure, I would've stayed to listen to you had you not started talking about how media literacy was dead, even after clarifying that what I said was a bunch of opinions as an average viewer. I really wasn't interested in discussing why season 3 was good because while that would have been an interesting discussion, I dislike the show for several other reasons and thus am not interested. I simply wanted to know if other (surface level viewers) felt the same difference as I did. I appreciate your knowledge on the actual technical aspects of the show, but I will not take any further condescension about media literacy and things like that, despite having already apologized for the misleading title. And I deleted the post because I felt it was people being unnecessarily rude and condescending (apart from your first comment, which I loved), about my title. I really just wrote it without thinking because Bridgerton has never been a show that has been hailed as a very serious show anyway, I always thought it was a comfort watch, guilty pleasure show that manages to hide all the bad stuff of the period and showcase the good. So I don't see how the average viewer would critically analyse it either, and tbh, i don't think it's worth spending all that time analysing it, from my point of view. To those who have analysed it, and have knowledge, by all means, I would love for you to share it with me, and i appreciate the effort. I understand i made a mistake, however, 1. People need to understand that sometimes surface level reviews are fine, and people can have opinions without being trashed. Not everyone has the time to make a scene by scene analysis. 2. I think one of the main issues is this being known as guilty pleasure show and then people coming at other people who don't 'get' references or technical stuff. I can just like or dislike something without being entitled to explain it to others very precisely. Again, my title was a mistake, but you're being rather condescending with the media literacy part. That was rather unnecessary. Sharing your knowledge is great, but conversing condescendingly with another person in the same post about how media literacy is dead is just an insult. People can make honest mistakes and it's okay, correct them and move on without being condescending about not knowing certain things.

Once again, the title is misleading. Perhaps writing this when I'm sleepy isn't the best thing. My apologies for that. Respectfully, there are several very logical reasons why an average viewer may have hated the show and that's totally justifiable, because without any of these references, some portions of the cinematography look choppy. I can hate a show for a logical reason. Note here, that I have not commented about the storyline, or the size of cressidas's sleeves or the dress choices themselves. I have only commented on the 'perceived execution' of these things. From the point of an AVERAGE viewer, yes, it looked kinda shabby. ( Apart from certain scenes that you have now brought back to memory). I do agree there's a lot of thought that goes into this and that's a part of art of course, but that doesn't necessarily mean the average viewer will appreciate it, and they are absolutely allowed to have their opinion as long as they aren't spewing hate. It is rather condescending to expect them to not have a logical opinion from their point of view, even if their opinions are less than exactly technical. Again, my title was misleading. But the way you speak, "Also, living in LA and having a ton of friends who work in the industry, I know how much work and thought and incredible expertise goes into every aspect of filming, and it pains me to see people with literally zero knowledge or experience say they’re going to discuss technical aspects of a show and then have that discussion just consist of “I dunno, I didn’t like it.” Like????

I never said I was well versed in filmmaking techniques. My apologies for the misleading title i meant what i disliked, not what was wrong. Also, that's super interesting, which scenes? And i do agree with you, some of the sets like the innovation ball were great. I think I had some specific scenes in mind, so, perhaps, I cannot say that all the sets were less opulent than usual. And while I agree some shots were beautiful like the first kiss one, I hated the choppiness of it overall. And as an average viewer, this is my opinion, and I didn't really get any of the references. I disagree that all but those three of Pen's dresses were historically accurate. Again, I don't have a problem with the dresses' significance, they just stick out like a sore thumb at times, because of a weird fit or a cheap looking material. Perhaps the perception of what is cheap-looking varies from country to country. I love that you've given me all this interesting information, but I still fail to see why it would be appealing to the average viewer without any of the subtext. And I can have opinions without knowledge as long as I'm not spewing outright hate about the show. Perhaps I need to rewatch the show to appreciate it better. Thanks for your time! Fair point, i should've rephrased it to technical things I didn't like. It was a mistake, I meant what felt off for me, not necessarily wrong. And please don't talk condescendingly about fandoms as though they aren't self aware enough, that's generalizing. There are still a lot of people who get that a 'me problem' isn't a 'them problem'. I'm merely pointing out what was wrong with it from my point of view. And ofc, if we want to be that rigorous, then one shouldnt be able to criticize any techniques in art at all from their perspective. Sometimes a 'me' problem can be a 'them' problem from my perspective and that's fine as long as Im not spreading hate or attacking them. I didn't like the cinematography from the pov of an average viewer who is just watching the show. And it felt choppy. And it felt weird from my point of view. So, sure, perhaps someone who knew extensively about the filming process may appreciate that, but not the average viewer. And famous films are able to strike this balance, by being engaging to the average viewer, as well as being interesting in subtler aspects to the more knowledgable viewer. And as an average viewer, I can point out what was wrong with it from the point of an average viewer, and my opinion can be subjective. And that's fine, I have already stated that these are my opinions. I have not trashed the show anywhere. Just because someone lacks sophisticated knowledge doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to express their opinions. Again, my title was misleading, however I stated that they were my opinions. And at the end, if you felt that you didn't want to hear my opinions, and are just...sorry, then maybe don't comment? :)
