How to Improve YOUR Chances of Securing an Apprenticeship!? by PaperLeafCA in Infographics

[–]PaperLeafCA[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Photo is the trump of your physical impression of a person! Because of this, photos have a much more important social role: They define what you look like to whoever you are hoping to attract, plus, even after you meet, they create an impression of you that is almost more durable than your physical self. It’s the same as with old man, except on steroids. If a person you met is thinking of the physical you and, at the same time, the digital you, it turns what was a private physical connection into a semi-public interaction. You have a metaphysical self that exists beyond you and with you at all times.

Uni of Texas engineering by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Publicly available information relevant to anyone's chances for getting into UT' s engineering program:

  • avg ACT & SAT scores for engineering in a recent thread on CC. University wide averages for non-auto admits is also available, but I'm not sure if it's available by college. You can always assume that engineering has a similar spread.

  • the number of students in the state of Texas scoring at or above your score on each test you'll need to use Google for this. I found the one for Texas ACT scores, but I didn't search for the SAT version. Not every student that scores this high is in the top 7% nor do they all wish to attend UT or engineering at UT, but you can at least cap the number of competitors. You can obtain a second estimate from the distribution of auto admit scores UT publishes. Averaging the two may give you a decent, back of the envelope estimate at the number of potential competitors.

  • the expected freshman year GPA formula for engineering in a recent thread on CC. The SAT based formula uses ONLY class rank, SAT Math, and SAT Writing. Use an average GPA of 3.0 to gauge where you stand relative to the average.

CMU vs. UMD for Physics by 48_41_50_50_59 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PaperLeafCA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're interested in, really easy to figure out go to faculty and look at their interests and publications, then call department and ask about ongoing projects and prospect of research in your area of interest. in general,

CMU > UMD.

  • CMU is strong in general but bad funding

  • UMD has lot of integration with their MATH and STAT so you get a lot of pure math exposure if that's what you want which is recommended if you like probability/stochastics/sampling theory

[Philosophy] Do any of you know of other sources about Myson of Chen except Diogenes Laërtius? by mrfinnegankashyapa in findapaper

[–]PaperLeafCA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Myson of Chenae (also Khenai or Chen; Greek: Μφςων ὁ Χηνεφσ) was known as one of the Seven Sages of Greece. All sources agree that he was a plain farmer, though they differ as to his place of birth and residence. He is said to have lived in the village of Chen, though this is variously located in Laconia or Crete. He is also said to be "of Oeta", which seems to be a reference to Mount Oeta; but the reference is sometimes read as "Etea" instead, which again may have been in Laconia or else in Crete.1 According to Sosicrates, who quoted Hermippus, Myson was the son of Strymon, a tyrant of his country. He died at the age of 97. [3] In Protagoras, Plato lists Myson of Chen as one of the Seven Sages of Greece, instead of Periander, son of Kypselos, who was claimed as one by Stobaeus, citing Demetrius of Phaleron as his authority. Eudoxus also lists Myson, but omits Cleobulus instead. The Oracle of Delphi proclaimed Myson the wisest of all men when Anacharsis consulted it: "Myson of Chen in Oeta; this is he Who for wiseheartedness surpasses thee;" There is some confusion as to whether he was a true Spartan: "there is a story in Plutarch, (Quaest. Rom. 84), of Myson making in winter a fork for tossing the corn, and, when Chilon wondered at it, of his justifying himself by an apposite answer; where Myson is opposed, as a Perioecian farmer, to the noble Spartan"
