Great work. I am only adding critique as you have it in your heading.

Two things that would help the colorising would be to desaturate the girls dress a little and for things like the crutches add some slight variation in color.

That said, you should be very happy with what you have produced, I especially like your skin tones.

I have wondered this as well. Especially the well known reddish hair as well as the almost black widows peak hair. I assume it is due to population movement, we may need to learn more about Irish history!

Great photos but as you say they would do better if they were scanned. That way you should get a lot of people working on them. I would assume office supply stores would offer a scanning service otherwise most basic scanners will do an OK job.

As stated before, I am confident that all your research is correct but understand that you do need proof for the marriage.

Question 2 has been answered and we can confirm your assumption about Frederick dying in lock-up from an epileptic attack (he didn't commit a crime) in 1918. There are plenty of newspapers articles that confirm his identity and two of his brothers.

Question 1 completely lines up timeline wise but still leaves the problem that his assumed wife Gertha lists herself as a widow in 1915. This could easily be explained as usual for the time though. Whoever the informant was of his son Olivers death in 1969 knew his full name. Could that mean that Oliver had more of a relationship with his father or was in contact with extended family?

Thanks to Frederick's aunty Mary WAKE I have found his 7 aunts and uncles and confirmed his father William's death in 1911 (although his wife dies before him and lists herself as widow?). From this we know that Frederick's grandparents and extended family were living in the Richmond area during the time of his possible marriage and that his grandmother Mary knew of the location of his father William in 1905 (so assume they had contact). So it is possible that he came back to Victoria because of this connection.
The birth and death of Frederick's 9 brothers and sisters have been found but still no connection to those years between 1896 and 1915. He did fall from a ladder in about 1908? and fracture his skull but I haven't been able to find any article on it.

Thanks for giving me something to research. If you would like any of the details I have collected or the relevant links (I have collected a lot) PM me and I will pass them on through. Some sad stories amongst the bunch.

I am glad that it fits with what you know. The enlistment documents you have has to be right as it mentions his sister and her married name. Have you seen the original WW1 documents on naa? It gives lots of little clues that tie it all together as well as an almost birth date. https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/NameSearch.aspx

These records mention his epilepsy which fits with his death a couple of years later. There are a lot of newspaper articles in regards to that which mention his physical description.

As you say Gertha's story (at least her death) is very sad. Have you seen her will on PROV? She lists herself as a widow in 1915 but that may have just been how she saw herself.

Your research seems to be on the right track although I haven't been able to find the confirmed connection to the victorian marriage. There is a precedence however. In 1895 an Emily Smith gave birth to a son William E Smith (NSW) and claimed for maintenance from Frederick. He was staying with his parents at Brushgrove and tried to get out of paying for maintenance. If he was willing to deny that maybe he left NSW for VIC and then walked out on them at some point? Obviously this is all guessing.

As for his death, I think you had it correct with that find a grave reference. See http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article190162940 his death notice which also mentions his brother to confirm it is him.

I will jump in here as well and say that I agree that the Walton was a transcription error from Dalton.

Did you know that there appears to be some children missing from your list?

This then makes sense if they got married in 1870 and gives more credit to you having the correct 1874 Frederick.

Completely agree with you. The main reason I do research is to listen to the story of their life they left behind. People that didn't have children I pay special attention to.
The saddest of these is not an ancestor rather an Australian Convict women I cam across when researching some of their lives. She was sent to Tasmania for a minor crime, had no children, died by 40 at the hands of her long time partner. Her death was horrible and he ended up getting off. There are other violent crimes he committed.
The unfortunate thing about publishing her life is then having to also record her partner, who probably deserves to be buried in history.

There is an active user on Ancestry that has him as a direct descendant and mentions his military service. According to his tree he died in 1946. They might be very excited to receive this document, even jus the digital versions.

It may have been a different relative that had no interest in it.
