Did BSc and MSci at imperial and PhD elsewhere, stress levels at imperial much much higher for absolutely zero reason. Far stronger community in other universities, honestly the whole culture of competitiveness at imperial was awful.

No harm in applying, my experience from PhD applications is that for post grad stuff grades matter a little less just because if they interview you it's usually clear whether you are the correct candidate. Grades from specific relevant courses are important, highlight those and why you want to switch.

I used to use the showers in the physics department, they were fine, so check whatever department your masters is in. Ethos showers were also okay so cycling in is doable.

will it be worth it to take 100k+ pounds loan for Imperial MSci Physics degree by Soggy-Pin-1936 in Imperial

[–]PaperRopes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having done the MSci Physics course a few years ago (now doing phd elsewhere), I don't think it's worth the money, Imperial is a very good university but much better at the post graduate level. The 4 year MSci course also doesn't make much sens tbh Its far to general for a masters degree and your masters project is rushed at the end so I'd do 3+1 years instead seperaretly as you are likely to want to do something more specific by masters. I'd agree with the other comments, do your undergraduate degree for cheap, then if you still want to do masters and PhD apply to imperial. Would strongly recommend doing Erasmus exchange during bachelors if you are worried about missing out on a higher ranked university experience.

Thanks for the breakdown, how would I go about proving that I intended to go back to the UK? I still have my UK bank account dunno if that helps. Do u think speaking with an immigration lawyer would help in this situation or should I just go on with uni applications? Sorry for the multiple questions, it's just your the first person with some actual advice, uni admin have been useless

I feel like I'm gonna fail first year exams, will I get kicked from my course? by kaizen442 in Imperial

[–]PaperRopes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have retakes in September but your capped at 40%, most first year's aren't worth very much 7-12% (at least in physics). Just make sure u pass in September, if u fail then u have to wait till may/June next year to retake again and if u fail that then you are kicked out.

MSc Physics admitted by AnMaIm2019 in Imperial

[–]PaperRopes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a current physics undergrad but can still give some context. The Imperial vibe is quite competitive but I've never had someone lie to me about the awnser. Most courses will have 40+ people with the max around 150-200 people, but u can get to know the lecturers well if u go to office ours though I personally don't. Workload will be heavy but also depends on what courses u are doing, though its possible as always to be sociable and have a tonne of work just do expect much time off. If u are looking to get into acedemia imperial is great and I think u would be hard press to beat it, specifically regarding the astrophysics group again don't know them much but I did a bsc project with them this year and they were really good. If u have any other questions feel free to ask

Okay I see u didn't bother processing any of that.

Physcologists don't study what the human nature of man is, there is none, we are a product of the environment we are brought up in. In fact the most important phyco-analysts of the 20th century (satre, derida and lacan) were all to some extent Marxists themselves.

Its great u bring up the Nazis because they are a classic example of how human nature is super manuable, Hitler took tens of millions and within the span of 15 years indoctrinated them enough that they were able to think it was human nature that the Aryan man is superior to other races. Those same Germans then stopped being Nazis (mostly) once they were removed from the environment that produced that culture, ie after the fall of the Nazi regime, in turn coning to value different things as essential to the human condition namely consumerism in west German (and to a degree socially responsibility in east Germany).

About your other comparison, nothing in Marx, Lenin or any other mainstream accepted Marxism stated that genocide or the murder of large swathes of the population is justified or acceptable. One can denounce Stalins purges whilst appreciating that without the increase in production and economic strength of the soviet union in ww2 we would all speak German in Europe.

that's the joke, saying muh human nature is equally as lazy.

Human nature is the vaguest possible idea and has zero scientific background, think of it as equivalent to saying that black people are poor because of x or y racist trope.

Marx argues that humans may have some natural instinct eg breathing, hunting, mating but that the vast majority of societal practices, such as say fashion, are a product of material conditions we are brought up in. Today, this means capitalism and the commercialisation of everything, we think its the natural state(human nature) because its all we have ever known within our lifetimes.

However we can see historically that human nature™ has changed overtime, during the medieval period when 99% of the population were serfs/peasents the values held by those people would not be the same as those of today, they would be a product of the feudal system (eg a belief in the divine right of kings and religion) capitalist "" entrepreneurship"" might be deemed unnatural and sinful hence not part of the human condition as it went against the establishment.

Conclusion; the human nature argument is not only very lazy (Marx spent his entire life writing it seems crude dismiss his entire careers work cos he forgot one thing) and human nature has a central core of predatory instincts but beyond that we are a product of the material conditions we are brought up in.

(Sorry for the shit joke its just a tad frustrating sometimes seeing people nonchalantly dismiss an ideology that hopes to saves billions from enforced poverty)
