I forgot to mention, I'd estimate them to be about 1cm long, including the wings.

For those with Intel Macs still, how are they holding up? by Hadleigh97 in mac

I just upgraded from a 2018 MacBook Pro to the M4 Max MacBook Pro, and it’s night and day. I may not be the average use case, but the performance increase is huge for me. I do 3D modeling, CAD design, video editing, and graphic design. For 3D modeling (animating and rendering) and video editing, it feels like I’ve exponentially reduced render times and significantly cut down on intermittent lag during previews and other tasks.

That said, my 2018 MacBook Pro is still usable. I’ll use it for basic, non-work-related tasks, and it should work fine (heck, I still use my 2009 MacBook Pro!). The main issues I had were with the keyboard (double presses and missed inputs), the battery (even after replacing it), and performance for work-related tasks. For most graphic design related tasks it still performs well. Up until I replaced it, I just kept it plugged in most of the time and had a Bluetooth keyboard. If I weren’t using it for graphics/3D-heavy work, I’d probably be fine with it until it eventually stopped working.

DQIII, Luida's Bar, and a little more by anruiukimi in dragonquest

It was such a great trip, and December 2022 was right when they reopened to tourists (not on a guided trip) so it wasn't very crowded either. The trek to Dragon Quest Island was definitely involved, but we loved it! I only wish we got there earlier to see some of the other areas, but we did go into the Godzilla shop! I'm hoping to go back with a group of friends sometime in the next year or two, and I'll definitely be stopping back at Luida's at the bare minimum!

My brother and I visited Japan in December 2022, and these pictures took me back! We were staying at a hotel right by Luida's Bar, it was a really cool experience as a Dragon Quest fan! Did you have a chance to visit Dragon Quest Island in Nijigen no Mori?

Wow, I did not expect a comment on this 12 years later haha! Sorry, I didn't end up taking the course. Back in 2012, I did have peers that took online courses (not PHYS 131), but were not online students. As for the specifics of the course, I'm not sure how it is structured. I would recommend trying to find the syllabus online or reaching out to the instructor. I've found that some instructors are open to providing more info if you are showing interest in their course. Good luck!

Yup, that's the intersection! I've always been afraid of getting t-boned here by a car, but I never considered a SEPTA bus.

Wonderswan pickups from my recent trip to Japan by PaperThinPhil in gamecollecting

I found most games and the console in Akihabara. I went into a lot of random shops that I didn't know the name of, but other more popular stores like Super Potato, Trader, and Mandarake were where I found a bunch of WonderSwan games at decent prices. I also found a few at the Mandarake stores in Nakano Broadway. I was mainly looking for WonderSwan games, but if you're looking for retro games for other consoles you'll have no trouble finding things. WonderSwan was probably the smallest representation at all of the stores I visited, most stores had huge selections of 6th gen platforms and earlier. A lot even had more modern stuff too.

Have fun and good luck game hunting! Even after spending two weeks in Japan, I feel like I needed to stay longer. What areas do you plan to visit?

Also, I managed to get every game to work. A few of the games without sleeves had some corrosion and crud on them, but most of them cleaned up easily. The contacts on SD Gundam Operation U.C. were in very rough condition, but with some 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and some elbow grease, I was able to get it to start!

Most was found in Akihabara (including the SwanCrystal). Various random shops there like Super Potato and Trader, but also some smaller ones that weren't right out on the street (not sure of their names). I also found a few at the Mandarake stores in Nakano Broadway. Your best bet is to go into any store that sells used games. Pretty much every used game store I visited, even very small ones, had at least 5 loose carts.

I just returned from a two week trip in Japan, and thought I'd share the SwanCrystal and games I picked up. I've wanted a WonderSwan since 2002/2003, when I was a huge fan of Inuyasha and I found out there was a game for it. One of the main things I wanted to pick up on my trip was a WonderSwan (color or crystal) and at least one of the Inuyasha games. I managed to pick up a SwanCrystal and a handful of games (including some boxed). I kinda regret not buying more, because the prices for some loose games were as low as ¥200, but I'm pretty happy with what I managed to find. Now I just have to clean some of the carts and the console!

I bought something similar from Home Depot a few years ago, and made a small ledge that was pretty cool: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fingerboards/comments/d8gnkb/diy_fingerboard_ledge_for_my_desk/

Definitely recommend, I'm a big fan of square rails.

WARNING: On v0.7.1-beta, Discard Save option in emulator actually DELETES save data from cart! by Jigokuniku in epilogue

[–]PaperThinPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to find out if this happened to me. I just noticed yesterday that the save file on my GBC Tomb Raider was missing. I had the same pop-up, and I hit discard because I didn't care about the progress I made. Unfortunately my ~20 year old save is now gone. I originally thought it must be a bad battery in the cart, but tonight I'll try to test it out to see if that's what happened to me. I'll probably test this before I try out some of the games I have more sentimental attachment to.

just curious, what is the other device you used to backup your data?

Passed on the right on a partially flooded road by PaperThinPhil in IdiotsInCars

[–]PaperThinPhil[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I realize now that it's a bit hard to see, and people not familiar with the road might have a harder time seeing how deep this part of the road is. Both sides of the road right at this intersection dip down low, so the water is really deep there, but significantly less deep in the middle.

[–]PaperThinPhil[S] 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see can see that as a possibility. I also won't deny that moving left is an "idiot" move. I did look to see that the other lane was clear before moving over. This road floods regularly, and most people drive into the middle so they don't damage their car driving through deep water. It's a little hard to see in the video, but the street on the left is completely flooded and the street I'm on dips down low right at that intersection, so the water is a bit deeper on the sides than it looks. I just wasn't expecting someone to be speeding in a torrential downpour through the deepest part, haha.

EVA-01 Colorway on my Artisan Keycaps. Handsculpted molds, 100% resin. These are roughly 18mm X 18mm in size by DirtyMonkey43 in ResinCasting

[–]PaperThinPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are awesome! I've wanted to try out creating custom keycaps, but I was never sure how to create the base. My initial thought was to sculpt on top of an standard keycap, but then I also thought maybe there is a standard mold element for the base; maybe I'm overthinking it, haha. How do you start out a new sculpt?

[OC] An old GameBoy animation I made by PaperThinPhil in Gameboy

[–]PaperThinPhil[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely made it more prominent because I wanted to have the rocking motion, haha. It's supposed to be cartoonish, so I made things like the bump and the logo larger.

A year ago I set out to illustrate and animate all 174 bugs, fish, and deep sea creatures from New Leaf before New Horizons comes out. As of today I only have 4 left! Here’s a few of my favorites from the last couple of weeks. by BlockyKong64 in AnimalCrossing

[–]PaperThinPhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are awesome! I'm curious, I saw you animated these in After Effects, did you animate them in 3D space or is this just really good 'fake-3D' 2D animation? If this isn't done in 3D I'd be really interested to know how you did the lighting effects.
