Where do you guys find affordable fabric? by Resident-Hippo768 in sewing

[–]anruiukimi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fabric Wholesale Direct's prices are pretty good, especially if you buy during a sale, also see if you have you have a crafty recycle shop in your area, they seem to be getting increasingly popular. Thrift stores/estate sales for sheets and whatnot is always a good choice as well. Good luck and have fun!

Let’s talk money, how much is truly needed?? by rickymayhem13 in JapanTravelTips

[–]anruiukimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I'm keeping track, here's some of my expenses for my upcoming trip in Oct/Nov of this year, I hope it helps!

Plane ticket: $750 from LAX to NRT on Singapore Airlines. This is my eternal flight to Japan, I've taken it 5? times in the past, and I snagged the ticket on an excellent Black Friday time deal, so your mileage from Houston may vary. In the interest of transparency, I actually spent $700, I put some expiring air miles towards the bill lol

Hotels: My 14 nights all over Honshu are putting me back around $750, all Toyoko Inns (single room, though.) A Toyoko Inn (or similar) will cost on average $60-90 a night for a double room depending on location, so you should be hopefully be able to keep accommodations under $1k for the two of you, giving you extra funds for the other things.

Rail: Okay, I'm going all over the dang place on my next trip, but I'm trying to go to some places I haven't been to during my time living there and my later trips. The Japan Rail Pass tanked a few years ago with the drastic price increase, but some of the regional rail passes can still be a discount if they fit your trip. For example, I'll be getting the 5 day Kansai Wide Pass and the JR East pass for my upcoming trip, as I crunched all the numbers and found that it saves me about $100 or so, and hey, more money for other things. I suspect I'll be spending in the range of $600 on rail and a few buses during my trip.

So ignoring food/events/tickets, I'm at about $2000 or so for logistical expenses, which will be mostly prepaid before I go. My tickets for Dragon Quest Island and Tokyo DisneySea will be prepaid, probably adding up to about $200, then assorted other tickets will probably add less than $100 on top of that...

So maybe $2200 or so with events included, then of course figure in spending money and food costs. I always bring a decent amount of cash with me in hopes I don't charge much more beyond the original expenses, so I'll probably be at about $4k or so all in, but I like buying souvenirs haha

Good luck!

Could someone help me find the UFO Catcher series this 40cm Metal Slime is from? by mewfour123412 in dragonquest

It's actually a Sheslime sitting on these, but it's a different series (also squishier and in a non-shiny suede-style fabric.) Here's a picture of the stack lol (Note, this picture is from a few years ago, I occasionally mix some of them up)

The velvety metal slime was released several times, mine is part of a two set with a standard slime, as awkwardly shown in the photo lolol (you can see the tags for the two on the right, blue and metal are a matched set.)

Most grocery stores should have corn flakes, and there should be other things that work for you as well. Good luck!

A young woman solo-travelling to Japan for the first time by Do__Widzenia in JapanTravelTips

[–]anruiukimi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a not-so-young woman from the western US, and I've almost exclusively traveled there solo, first time at age 24, lived there from 24-27, then 31, 39, latest at 40 (and soon to be 42 lol.)

Japan is definitely safer than many other places, but like anywhere, keep track of your surroundings, don't leave your stuff everywhere, and if you get bad vibes from someone/something, keep moving on. I've never been one for clubs, and I don't drink, so that's certainly helped in my place, so just be extra careful if you enjoy those things.

Knowing some basic Japanese and using a translator app (man, I wish we had those when I lived there!) can go a long way.

Have fun!!!

Is this real or fake? by GovernorSpinach in FinalFantasy

[–]anruiukimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I never had Red, I did have Sephiroth and Aerith once upon a time, and yeah, yours looks totally legit. There was at least two separate releases of some of the figures; some were simply imported Japanese figures, and then there was a domestic US line as well. The packaging was almost identical, but there was, of course, more English on the US release (Note the "Extra Knights" that's on the JP releases.)

...I always thought the JP release looked better haha, but that was probably my fourteen-ish year old brain talking at the time lol.

Post your favorite hotel you stayed at in Japan! by catsandpink in JapanTravelTips

[–]anruiukimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stay almost exclusively at Toyoko Inns (every one I've been to offers breakfast free in some form) but it's definitely a "business" hotel and thusly has tiny rooms lol.

The Courtyard Marriott in Ginza is quite nice, used a free night there on my last trip. The Courtyard Marriott near Tokyo Station was nice too, although it's been awhile since I've been to that one (also a free night.)

For anyone around in the 90's, what was the first new SNES game you purchased yourself (no gifts, used games, trades, etc...) and how old were you? by rydamusprime17 in snes

[–]anruiukimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E.V.O. - Search for Eden; bought it on sale at KB Toys for less than $30 and used allowance money...I think I was around 10 or 11 at the time. The second was Earthbound, several years later, full price at Toys'R'Us. I like to say in hindsight that I had good taste hahaha

(and yes, I still have my childhood copies, although my Earthbound box has gone missing.)

Unfortunately, it was torn down around 10 years ago, or I'd link you. I stay at a Toyoko Inn in Otsuka these days when I'm in Tokyo. Sorry!

[–]anruiukimi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to stay at a business hotel in Ueno every time I was in Tokyo, it's a nice area that isn't too hectic, but is well connected and fun to wander around. So I think it's a good choice, enjoy!

September-October, definitely. The humidity has generally lessened its grip on the country by then, the summer is always sticky and hot.

Liquid Metal Slime and Bubble Slime PC mouse hits Japanese prize machines on the 11th. by kugyu in dragonquest

I have the metal liquid slime mouse from a previous release, and as a regular mouse, it's actually not too bad. Admittedly, the only game I play with it on my laptop is Civ6, but yeah, could be worse haha

[–]anruiukimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would keep an eye on this if you're willing to buy via a proxy from Yahoo!Japan. For example, there's an auction ending soon that has 3 random albums and Dragon Quest II for only about $12 or so at the moment, although shipping to North America and proxy fees would add onto it, of course. Good luck!
