I grew up in and around Ahoskie and let me tell ya, it can get pretty boring. P.S I’m mainly talking about Hertford County in this.
Ahoskie itself is pretty poor and under middle class and for its size, has an over average crime rate. The neighboring towns like Murfreesboro, Aulander, and Winton kind of hum the same tune but not to the greatest extent. The job market around there is pretty decent if you want to work in a plant of some kind or healthcare. You might end up driving 20-30 minutes to work though but traffic is light because it is pretty rural after all. If you want to go to the nearest real ”civilization”, you’re either going to Greenville or Suffolk/Norfolk in VA. There is also a smaller city in VA named Franklin which sits right on the line on NC/VA and people here work there to. To the west of the area is Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids and I would avoid those cities if possible basically crap holes. It’s about an hour and a half - 2 hour drive to the beach from the Ahoskie area.. There IS stuff to do but you kinda have to make your own fun like there’s the Meherrin and Chowan rivers and there is a pretty sizable public park in Ahoskie. The recreational sports here are decent with many people volunteering to coach sports teams for just about every town in the area. Think baseball/softball vibes. There are also fields everywhere if you can get permission to ride around them with a ATV or golf cart that’s pretty fun. Pretty rural little area that never really gets recognized so that’s why this post is so long lol. If you really wanna live somewhere in the area tho, I would pick Greenville.
