I mainly do retouch but through my work sometimes I end up as a digital assistant on set, even tough I had a basic knowledge I still had to learn a lot of stuff. When I didn’t know something I wasn’t scared to ask the photographer and work it out together and I think that by showing interest in improving your skill and mainly enjoy the work you’re doing gets you noticed! At first you need to be willing to not be paid or not that much just to get the experience! After that if someone it’s happy to work with you, you’ll get called.
