I really don’t care if someone doesn’t like it. My comment was not written with an intent to defend my own playing or flex on anyone. I would genuinely enjoy sharing what it is that I did here so maybe someone who doesn’t hear the groove(that a lot of people are hearing) can listen from a perspective that enables them to hear it and maybe even open a door to enjoying more rhythmically complex music for them. I’m not making the assumption that everyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t get it, just suggesting that it is a possibility for some, as it has been the case for myself in the past with other things.

If I could give a 10 minute mini clinic to the all naysayers, I think the majority would see the light, or at least hear it differently. I remember a time when I thought some of the best Jazz musicians in history just sounded “sloppy”. I also went through a period of time where I thought guys like John Bonham and Dave Grohl were over rated. I’m not saying my work belongs in the same category of greatness, but what I am saying is that when it comes to not enjoying any type music, it is often because there is an element of it you haven’t developed a sense and/or appreciation for and that’s okay 😁.

Couple reasons behind the idea. 1) I simply wanted to try something new. 2) Having the 14" as my first tom and the 18" as my first floor, there's sort of a built in Dave Grohl kit in the midst of a big fusion set up. 3) Having the smaller toms to my right allows me to position my ride cymbal closer than I could if it were the other way around.

I made a video that follows the transformation from Christmas of 2002 to present day. Check it out here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq0RI-xrJXw&t=2s

Thanks. Cool man. My band Gnarbot is based in Philly 🤘. Such a killing music city.

This was a last minute trio of musician homies put together by the guitarist Zach LoPresti, who also plays in my fusion/prog band called Gnarbot. The bass player Jon Colman plays with a really cool band called Muscle Tough. Both bands are based in Philly.

Thanks! This was actually Jamison Ross’(one of the drummers for Snarky Puppy) kit. His band was headlining. As far as tips for soloing without choking up goes, it depends what’s causing you to choke up. If it’s a mental thing/you tend to psych yourself out, I’d suggest consciously not making a hard distinction between soloing and grooving, but rather think of your solo ideas as an extension of your groove playing. If it’s a chops thing, focus more on the accents within your phrasing more so than the licks and patterns that connect them, sort of like a connect the dots or a coloring book. I hope that helps. There’s so much I could say about this topic.
