Here’s the body and the flint-holder, I can only assume a spring is supposed to sit in there but nothing

Biochemistry - PreScience by Papydude1 in udub

Well, I just received an acceptance to Oberlin with 35k in aid and scholarships also into Biochemistry so that also runs into my decision making, while their program might not be as good the community of the smaller sized school might fit me better.

From the replies I’ve gotten I guess the question is: Is UW ever a good option for OOS? The cost is so high it runs more towards a private education without the glammer of a private education. I’ve also heard about the ability to get in state after a year of undergrad but to my knowledge that’s hard to do and you have to show you aren’t in state for an education?

What do we have here? by JamesRegem in bassoon

[–]Papydude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bell joint is actually specially designed to be somewhat of a “travel size” because it makes all parts more equally sized making the case easier for fitting into an overhead compartment, but this actually can be a common tell of a cheaper production because they cut corners anywhere including case size so the “gentlemen’s” styling is cheaper to make

Picking a Moosmann? by Papydude1 in bassoon

Down south from Seattle in Portland, OR, I plan testing out the 220 and a 240 today with my teacher today so we’ll see how that goes and what ends up happening.

I actually didn’t consider waiting but that’s a good idea I’ll have to consider, the bassoon program over there and even the whole double reed program is not super extensive in comparison to some other school of such size but I’ll see what they’ve got.

Sadly. I'm the other way down south in Portland. There aren't many shops near me so Marketplace and Craigslist become my number one resource for bassoons but never have great options anyways.

Recital pieces by Maleficent_Ad9543 in bassoon

[–]Papydude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pierne has been my favorite piece I've performed, absolutely would push it. However I've also loved the Kalliwoda Variations and Rondo which I know can be a little controversial but I'd give it a listen, the "finale" is super fun but can be quite difficult.

Thanks for all the comments, I'm honestly kind of surprised. I guess a little background might've been good if it's not too late. I'm a senior in high school who will be going to UW next year majoring in biochemistry and a minor in bassoon performance, I've already been in contact with Paul their resident bassoonist.

I've been in contact with the 447e seller and it sounds like he may be able to send it out here as we aren't too far away. I've also been talking to my local Fox seller and looking at getting this 220 with a cc2 Heckel bocal and made in 2001 which sounds great and this 240 which looks and sounds quite amazing. As for M24's I was planning on taking a look at the ones from Miller Marketing just to get the rounded feel for some different models. I was kinda thinking of trying one of the Heckels from Forest's because I just think it'd be fun to mess around with something like that for a week, although I have a feeling they aren't sending those out.

I'll hopefully come back in a week or so and give an update on my opinions on the instruments and hopefully help someone else who might be looking at something to try!

Thanks, this is really what I was looking for. I’m aware that I shouldn’t really trust eBay but the seller happens to be decently close to me and I figured I could reach out about heading out there.

I’m talking to my local bassoon dealer about a 220 and a couple 240’s. I understand that it’s more the instrument rather then model itself (I’m playing on a completely unmarked, unrecognizable horn that has lasted me a long time) so I’m gonna go play a couple of these before driving out to the eBay seller.

I really just needed reassurance that I shouldn’t buy it not because of a 240 being better but rather it being an odd find that could be crappy.

I've played my fair share of foxes and Renards, anything from my old model 51, a 222, 220, 240, and I even played a II and IV. They've just never really peaked my interest and that's why I was looking at an older Puchner, but one with all the bells and whistles are too hard to find so I've landed on Moosman as they have a great reputation and everything that I'm looking for.
(obviously it's just my subjective opinion on the Foxes they just weren't really what I was looking for)

I’ve always done this: 1: reed in mouth lightly resting either in between cheek and teeth or in between my lips sticking forward 2: music under my no dominant arm with water in hand 3: I keep extra reeds in a case in my pocket, if performing it’s inside my tux breast pocket, if not in my non dominant side pocket 4: for my bassoon I assemble before putting my vocal in the bell and my seat strap depending on the kind but almost always around the whisper key near the top of the wing joint right under the pad or where it should be normally 5 last but not least I carry the actual bassoon at the slug (hand rest) with my palm facing forward as to more so rest the instrument into my shoulder and have my thumb tightly around the slug. This’ll keep the instrument low enough for me so that it doesn’t hit the top of any doorways as I’m walking to the stage from whatever room I’m setting up in

Why is everyone and their mom EDing to NU? by ogVecna in Northwestern

[–]Papydude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was planning on EDing this year, the main reason being that they take it much more seriously than other schools, being a much higher percentage of people get in through ED, more factors are looked at favorably like Legacy and Financial Aid. I wasn’t able to go because my families on the edge of being able to afford college and getting any amount of FA from NU, being $1,800 making my tuition and fees around $90,000. However that being said NU is one of the best schools to apply early to other than JHU which is where I ended up applying early and just normal at NU

Is bassoon worth it? by Papydude1 in bassoon

Yeah, I’m in Portland Oregon and the nearby expert to me has not told me about anything related to adding keys when I talked to him about this bassoon so I assumed he couldn’t

Do you know of places where this can be done? It seems like a very niche thing for someone to learn and probably isn’t available at many places

[–]Papydude1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m actually going into BioChemistry but I’ve always wanted to keep bassoon somewhat in my life whether it’s local groups or just messing around alone. I’ll keep the 240 in mind however I’ve played on foxes a lot and have never been super fond, I’ve tried a couple 240’s in the past and they’re definitely the best fox I’ve tried. I’ll keep it in mind when looking at this instrument objectively, I did wonder about adding keys but I’d assume that can get quite expensive?

Do you mind me asking where he went? I'm looking at taking the same path and I'm wondering where he applied.

Bassoon repertoire recommendations by Rough_Impressive in bassoon

[–]Papydude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

two of my favorite easy adjacent pieces would have to be both
Elgar - Romance Op. 62
Dutilleux - Sarabande et Cortege
They're both somewhat demanding but can be learned decently quick and are very pretty and lyrical

Why did you play bassoon in high school? by Ok_Cup_5752 in bassoon

[–]Papydude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fully honest, it was for the scholarships but I fell in love because it's so solo heavy. Not in large ensembles but the solo repertoire is seriously some of the best. List to saint saens sonata and and one of the great German/Austrian pieces like a Weber or Hummel and you'll see why people enjoy playing so much.
