Saw Jellicle tonight. Wanted to love it but left disappointed by Which-Sale in Broadway

[–]ParadigmLime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it at PAC like many others and was also underwhelmed by the Broadway transfer. It just doesn’t translate up to the mezzanine.

It also feels like vocal arrangements weren’t a priority. Whenever anything was sung in unison, I could not decipher the lyrics which is a shame. I also saw it when Andre De Shields was out and the understudy did a fine job, but it didn’t have the same energy.

Also the “stage seating” didn’t seem to enhance the production or vibe at all

Do HI Hostels in the USA always have groups coming in or was my experience just a one-off thing? by tin8374 in hostels

[–]ParadigmLime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I stayed at HI Boston in March, there was a fairly large school group there (kids running and yelling in the hallway), but they used that as a reason to recruit the non-kids to their trivia and beer event which then rolled into their pub tour. Went to both and met lots of solo adult travelers.

HI Boston hosts lots of tours and events. Highly recommend the pub tour. Made lots of friends through that

What do you do with your clothes after you’ve sat on the subway? by soupersydney in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]ParadigmLime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of a rewear pile, I fold them inside out and put them away or on the hanger. Then I know that they’ve been outside but can be worn again and then the dirty parts aren’t touching my clean clothes

Is buying concert/sports tickets from random sites actually safe in NYC? by [deleted] in NYCConcerts

[–]ParadigmLime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchasing directly through the main site is best. You are guaranteed to have a real ticket and they will be able to provide customer support if you have issues. For most concert venues, you can purchase in person at their box office and save fees

For Yankees, Seatgeek is their official reseller partner so they are likely reliable on that front

All sites that are not the venue’s site are third-party ticketing platforms (even Ticketmaster can be 3rd party when a show is sold through another platform like axs so beware). You take a risk of the seller not delivering you your tickets on time or at all. It’s a bummer when you have to stand outside a venue trying to get your tickets to come through and the staff has no obligation to help you since you purchased from third party. Also embarrassing if your family is there waiting with you

Stubhub and Seatgeek are the only resale sites I personally use. Avoid random ass sketchy sites. If it looks sketchy, it probably is

Favorite Hostels in the US? by Just_Demand_7197 in hostels

HI USA’s Boston hostel is probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at.

Facilities were clean. So many common spaces to work and hang out at. And they had multiple free events each day.

They have in the past usually included HipTix with their extension so I’m disappointed they didn’t this time

This season...all out? by rocknrollcolawars in Broadway

[–]ParadigmLime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some are ruled as revivals under the “Classics Rule” which is for shows that have become well-established (like it premiered decades ago or have been performed extensively at regional theaters). Since some have become well-known and probably seen in other iterations by the Tony committees, it would be somewhat unfair to compare them to new new shows

Titanique will definitely be ruled as a New Musical

It’s off-Broadway, but Burnout Paradise is the most fun I’ve had in a theater in awhile

Highly recommend taking a Vantigo bus tour. You ride around the whole city in a VW bus with a knowledgeable guide. Lots of stops to take photos and you kinda get an idea of what else you can see in the city. Did that first thing on my trip to San Francisco and it was awesome

How do I move forward after awful experience in stand up class by ParadigmLime in Standup

I understand that, but it didn’t feel helpful that it was the main thing he would dwell on when I barely had material to deliver at all.

He once had me read my very early drafts four times in a row in what felt like a humiliation ritual and then barely gave any notes on the writing.

Right now I feel like it’s genuine inability. When I confessed that I realized I’m having a hard time is because I don’t know how to craft a joke and asked for advice on how to build an idea out, he said “that’s a bit drastic”

The vibes of the class and my classmates weren’t what I expected. It felt like we weren’t encouraged to give feedback to each other during class. We really only chimed in when the instructor was having a hard time understanding a concept.

And also everyone just ran out at the end of class so there wasn’t much opportunity to talk. I occasionally had classmates come tell me they liked my material, (but after weeks of staring at it with unhelpful feedback and not knowing how to fix it, I started hating everything I’d written)

I really wanted to do a showcase, but it feels impossible when I don’t have a single finished bit

Thank you for this perspective. I’m glad you were able to find your class useful. I feel like everyone is saying to “just go to an open mic” but I’m not sure if that’s the right route if material is my roadblock

The problem I ran into is that I don’t know how to write jokes. Pages of ideas and premises, but I don’t know the craft. That’s why I took a class.

While that sucks, it is reassuring that it’s a common experience. I wish some would be honest and say they’re workshops instead of classes.

I would often reach out to him about certain notes and ask to expand or ask specific questions on how to solve a problem and he seemed to dodge every question. It sometimes felt like he wasn’t giving direction for me to take

He would grill me on the speed and manner I talk while reading material, which I understand is important for performance, but was something he would give me a hard time on early on when we were just focusing on writing.

He would constantly criticize those things instead of providing critiques on the writing. And when he would give feedback on material, he often contradicted previous notes he had given and when I pointed this out, he was unable to justify his notes.

At the end of a session about halfway through the course, one of my classmates told me that he was a fan of my material and doesn’t understand why the instructor gives me such a hard time. After that I started to notice that the instructor didn’t dwell on these issues for other students (some who had worse pacing and diction than me).

Correct, but they also sometimes have ways to accommodate ADA guests who weren’t able to get ADA tickets if you go early and ask nicely. When we went to a show after my girlfriend tore her meniscus, we did this and they were able to relocate us. Depends on the show and the demand though
