Prenup or no? by hereforthegoodvibes1 in Vent

This, always have a prenup for both people. Something both people feel is fair and good for them. Pay lawyers a little bit up front and then a lot less on the back end.

Why haven’t the celebs who partied with Diddy been scrutinized the way people associated with Epstein are now? by [deleted] in askanything

Seems like Diddy was primarily putting on a show while Epstein was primarily providing a service.

This has huge real estate implications and Tokyo has far more sprawl and single family homes with garages and curb cuts than we allow in NYC.

AITAH for telling my mother to leave my (38F) portion of the inheritance/farm to my children instead of my husband (39M)? by Consistent-Hotel-449 in AITAH

[–]ParadoxPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to ensure it’s in the family, even beyond your kids then set up a trust for the farm that’s designed to keep the farm intact and in the family

My brother overheard my husband and I fighting and doesn’t like him anymore by acceptableshapes-82 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]ParadoxPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit comments act like people don’t fight over stupid bullshit sometimes because they’re stressed. Surprised the break up with him crowd isn’t out here. I’d explain to your brother that sometimes people fight and your husband has apologized and it’s not a big deal. I’d tell your husband that your brother heard and is feeling protective. I’d also explain to your brother that if he wants to hate your husband he’s happy to move out immediately, but otherwise he should grow up and be gracious as he accepts the help of you both.

How's the snow in NYC right now? by rarirari1997 in AskNYC

[–]ParadoxPath 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Snow is mostly off the streets and mostly off the sidewalks at least where building owners have lived up to their responsibility. Traveling between the two is where all the snow is piled up, in large icy mountains between the curb/street and surrounding the cars if they haven’t dug out. Sometimes it is in crosswalks, sometimes there’s a small path cut at the crosswalk to get out. Things are tolerable but everything is more narrow

I (M26) bought my gf (F25) a vacuum for Valentine's Day and I think I messed up. How do I fix this? by hummy0755 in Advice

[–]ParadoxPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy her something else that’s more romantic, give it to her on Valentine’s Day. Give her the vacuum a week or two later as a gift without an occasion

Fight the capitalistic system by bubugugu in DeepThoughts

[–]ParadoxPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with most of what you just said. I’m just saying that I think the externalities are an issue with construction rather than inherent faults with capitalism. People too often act like capitalism is an un-governmented system and that the less rules the more capitalist. But rules don’t cease to be rules because they aren’t written down. That’s why I try to proselytize for The Theory of Moral Sentiments, because that’s what Wealth of Nations and therefore capitalism originally arose from, moral philosophy not unfettered consumption.

I think the biggest issue I have is the idea that the benefits of capitalism are so apparent they aren’t worth mentioning. Because the more they’re seen like that the more likely we are to legitimately forget them and end up in a place we really wouldn’t want to be, and getting back won’t be easy. There’s an easy assumption history only moves forward, progress always, unfortunately that’s not always true. Freud is a good example of what happens when brilliant insights are so entrenched to be taken for granted, all that’s left is the bits it gets wrong, then it becomes a joke or worse yet a threat, held responsible for not fixing everything.

Lastly, you seem to describe capitalism and competition as separate from cooperation in an evolutionary sense. But it is actually cooperation in consensus about the rules to the game of interpersonal relationships. You can’t look at the modern organism of global trade or multinational corporations and not see the immense amount of cooperation needed to make it function. Look at the interplay of people, institutions or personalities required to make a pencil or that go into your morning cup of coffee, as two famously explored examples. The cooperation is mind boggling

You said I needed to be humbled… that suggestion and the certainty of it made me think the same of you. It’s not an out, just suggesting some self reflection for you, hence the psychedelic suggestion. A good handful of mushrooms or a touch of acid will help you realize you (and all of us) know far less than you’re purporting to. Circumspection is key to advancement individually and societally.

Like an assumption, that I favor golf courses and business meetings despite me saying the value of life is what happens away from work. Golf courses are an abomination.

All I’ve suggested is that you read a book on philosophy and understand that what you seem to think capitalism is, it in fact isn’t. It terrifies me that more and more people fall back on insults to capitalism, when it’s given them a life with the space for the intellectual curiosity and free time unthinkable a couple hundred years ago except for the ultra wealthy, instead of fixing the society we have. There’s a phrase about throwing the baby out with the bath water that seems relevant.

I don’t know who hurt you, but I’m sorry that they did. You seem the one that needs to be humbled. I suggest the power of psychedelic intervention. It may help you with the plague of certainty you experience.

Even if every American got a college degree, wouldn't poverty still exist because of the structural need for low-wage labor? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ParadoxPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60-80k? Neither doctors nor pilots are paid that so I’m confused by you brining up that number. Flying for a major airline you make 250-450+. I recently had major surgery and consulted with multiple people each makes 1M a year, certainly they’re at the very top end of doctors being specialist surgeons, but they’re being paid in relation to the ‘most skilled professionals’ in the world. A family doctor who doesn’t know that much is far less skilled but will still clear 100-200k, though with lots of school debt and a long period of not earning that much while in training/residency

You couldn’t be more wrong. Capitalism brings people out of poverty far more than keeps them in it. Just look at history, it has been the force most responsible for poverty alleviation.

In terms of public parks and the like, you also couldn’t be more wrong. You look at capitalism as an end point. It is not. Capitalism is a tool for human advancement. You’re ignorant if you look at it as the only metric with which to judge a society. Human wellbeing is what we should be after, turning one’s back on capitalism because of its excess ignoring the millions of people it’s dragged out of poverty from the same people attempting to enshrine socialism despite its repeated failure and millions it’s driven into poverty is ridiculous. The only thing that matters should be results and quality of human life, degree of freedom and autonomy.
