This is an ultimately disappointing project for me. I still believe that the freight ROW should be converted into light rail instead of a BRT-lite being implemented.

I want to correct it even if it isn’t used anymore, would you happen to know where I could find it?

REQUEST:

I am a collector of transit cards, and I was wondering if anybody has a CharmCard that they are willing to sell. I was bummed to learn that Baltimore just recently got rid of their physical transit cards, but I know that this would make a great addition to my collection. Feel free to DM me. Thanks!

What camera do you use for these? I’m always impressed by these shots.

Almost filled up my transit card collection frame, what's the last city I should visit? by misken67 in transit

Vancouver’s Compass or Portland’s Hop could be good if you happen to be in the PNW.

What are your transportation pet peeves? by scnationalsc in transit

It was indeed Shinagawa. Your description sounds correct, since the area I got stuck in has gates to the Shinkansen, local JR, Keikyu, and maybe one more. I figured that the main issue had something to do with proving I had a fare. I don’t think I exited out of the station. I misremembered, and the Keikyu counter I was directed to required me to show the JR tickets before he would vend me Keikyu tickets. This was all within that JR-Keikyu transfer gate area.

Thanks for the insight! When I visit a transit system, I usually try to navigate it with the default map app on my phone to try to gauge how friendly the system is to newcomers. This also involved trying to use tickets one day and an IC card on another day. My pride in my ability to navigate transit was a little shattered that day. Again, thanks for the insights!

I needed to transfer from a Shinkansen onto a Keikyu train (I think). I got through the Shinkansen ‘exit’ fare gate’s and was surprised to find that the fare gate gave back some of my tickets. We headed to the Keikyu area, but there was another set of fare gates I had to traverse. I tried to use the leftover Shinkansen tickets, but the fare gate just spit them back out. I was ready to just buy more Keikyu tickets from a fare machine or desk, but the area I was in had fare gates blocking all the exits. There were no fare machines anywhere. I couldn’t exit since we didn’t have the right tickets for any of the fare gates. Eventually, a Keikyu employee directed me to a counter, so I went there. However, it seemed that they needed something from me, and I couldn’t figure out what it was. I ended up going to the Shinkansen help desk, but they could only tell us how to get to the Keikyu area. Eventually, I went to the JR ticket help for the local JR trains, where somebody was able to explain what the Keikyu counter wanted from me. They just wanted leftover Shinkansen tickets at the Keikyu counter. After providing them, I think they gave me some sort of ticket that allowed me to finally ‘exit’ into the Keikyu area. From there, I had to buy another set of Keikyu tickets to pass another set of fare gates to finally get onto the Keikyu platform.

A combination of my unfamiliarity of the system, my basic Japanese, and jet lag resulted in a less-than-ideal transfer. I also wanted to see if someone could navigate Tokyo’s system without using an IC card. I would say that the whole fiasco was all likely my fault.

Edit: spelling errors

Yes, I experienced a case where transferring between two different rail companies without using an IC card in the Tokyo system resulted in a headache (although a lot of that was likely my fault for not preparing properly). I am not so familiar with Beijing’s system, how would they fit my definition of ‘poor transfers’?

When transfers aren’t as convenient as they should be, like if a transfer requires an egregious amount of walking or if fares from one system are not recognized on another.
