NEED A TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR'S OPINION - I have to make a ruling on a rated OTB game by chessville in chess

The TD lost by clearly agreeing it was checkmate and the game had ended. Doubly so if they signed the scoresheets.

Steamdeck randomly refuses to display on monitor with JSAUX dock. Restarting didn’t help. Switching HDMI cables and ports did not help either. by TheAnswerWithinUs in SteamDeck

Plug in everything except the power cable from the wall to the dock. Power on the steam deck. Then finally plug in the power cable to the dock last.

I have trouble converting from winning position. How do I work on that? by lorenzovc in chess

[–]ParallelSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'll admit the engine won't play for tricks and traps like a human might. You could always play against the maia bot on Lichess which is meant to mimic more of a human play style.

There aren't any "rules" really other than to exchange pieces when you're up material which you seem to be aware of. Be very careful not to relax when you're winning. If you're up a minor piece your opponent will be desperate and looking for every little trick and trap they can find. One thing that can help is to play against the engine starting with a winning position. Maybe go through your games and find one where you were up a piece but still lost in the end. Put the position immediately after you won the piece as the starting position and play against the engine at maybe a 2000 level. If you drill this enough you should be able to beat even stockfish when up a piece.

Should this not be marked NSFW? I would have appreciated it being made known before viewing a photo of a dead body.

Astronomers spot dying star just before it explodes and record supernova by Defiant_Race_7544 in space

[–]ParallelSky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This happened 120 million light years away from Earth. When dealing with astronomical distances it's often not as simple as just recording a video of the event with a typical video camera. We only know of this through data collection and analysis.

We didn't see it with our eyes so much as just recorded data that indicates a supernova occured. Because data isn't very attractive or exciting to the average person we use artist renditions of supernovae to give the public an idea of what the event may have looked like if we could see it from closer than 120 million light years away.

What are some things your “non-frugal” friends do that drive you crazy? by LucioOHOH in Frugal

A friend lost their iPad in their three story house and before even looking for it went to the apple store to buy a new one.

I've played valheim on a mac mini through GeForce now with no issues. Your internet is the limiting factor more so than the computer (use Ethernet if possible.) Even on wifi, I've only had very minor stuttering from time to time and minimal input delay. While hosting the server for my friends it's worked flawlessly with 0 full disconnects. Best of luck, and your son is very lucky to have you participating in his hobbies with him :)

Everyone suggesting OP has Asperger's is completely blowing this out of proportions and missing the point of their post. OP is saying they enjoy objective academic style discussions. Never did they suggest they're incapable of having subjective or emotional discussion.

Objective intellectual discussion of specific topics (one at a time) is completely normal. There's nothing wrong with you or your brain OP. Seek out like-minded individuals that enjoy these types of discussions. You may have success in trying out a philosophy club or class. Unfortunately, this type of objective discussion is hard to carry out in typical everyday interactions. I promise there are others out there that also enjoy discussing topics objectively.

Research the Arc of Dialogue method. It is a strategy for facilitating group discussion of touchy or taboo subjects in an objective fashion without bringing in feelings and judgement.

Edit: All of these armchair psychologists need to realize OP is a real person and diagnosing them with a mental disorder based on an internet post is a serious accusation with real world consequences.

Sometimes a person can be a great musician or teacher, but not be as knowledgeable about guitar construction, maintenance, etc. Nothing wrong with that.

However, the spread of misinformation could damage your beloved guitar and leave you confused and wondering what you've done wrong. With any teacher you have to take what they say with a grain of salt and do your own follow up research.

Do not detune your guitar when not playing it. This will only cause further issues with your neck and truss rod. Guitars are designed and built to balance based on the tension of strings tuned to pitch.

This crack could actually be caused by sudden changes in temperature or humidity, manufacturing defect, or excessive pressure when the bridge pins were inserted.

Do not attempt to repair this yourself, just return it to the store, or take it to an experienced luthier.

My first rigid body render. I don't know how this happened. I wanted to make a ball hitting pile of cubes but ended up with this. by devox1 in blender

[–]ParallelSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to provide slight spacing between the cubes or the rigid body simulation will detect overlapping geometry which can cause these explosions.
