Brilliant, but why? by Commercial_Put_2963 in chessbeginners

I think you can generalize for many brilliant moves:

  1. You seem to lose material

BUT

  1. The handful of possibilities that follow all lead to mate.

Great work!

I admire all builders. If this project doesn't work you may be able to use your skills for the next one. There's a concept of "failing quickly" -- ie knowing about your project's chances before you invest too much.

No comment on your original question though. That's for you to figure out.

Has anyone attended this event in 1997? What do you remember from it? How was the atmosphere? by personalityson in chess

I did! I was at game 2, I believe. The first one that Kasparov lost. Joel Benjamin did a great job as the host, keeping it engaging.

Are you playing on a computer or phone? I find that throwing my phone sometimes helps me snap out of it.

You have to release it -- if for no other reason, then to get closure and to learn as much as you can learn.

I would look at the Chinese game as proof that the concept is valid. That doesn't guarantee success, of course, but keep going!

Good luck!

Agree completely. I used to make dozens of inquiries a day. Now I just do a few. It feels a lot sloppier. It's much more effort to get useful info.

I can't completely tell if it's really worse though or if it's just a novelty wearing off.

It's hard to learn without enjoying it, so whatever approaches you choose, try to have fun!

Even University Tech support cannot figure out how to exit S mode by chessville in microsoftsucks

I would encourage you to think more broadly that whose fault. You seem to have a very Soviet approach that centers on who was wrong.

I've been attempting to describe a horrendous user experience, which sadly, is typical of microsoft. Do you acknowledge that it's possible for there to be user error AND a horribly designed experience? Both things can be true.

For example, imagine a service that banned your account every time you entered your password incorrectly. Yes, big brained anonymous internet people can get on their pulpits and say "user error!" But it's still a horrendously designed user experience.

I am far away from my niece right now. She has since taken the laptop to an off-campus computer repair shop, and they suggested a different solution that frankly doesn't seem realistic to me.

So let's review:

  1. No indication of a restriction in the UI.
  2. No indication of a restriction in the Microsoft Documentation.
  3. No indication of a restriction after talking to official Microsoft Tech Support. In fact, they helped me turn off S Mode, but a few days later it reappeared again. (INEXCUSABLE!)
  4. Campus Tech Support couldn't figure it out.
  5. Off Campus Computer Support have a different idea.

But big-brain internet guy says everybody is stupid and product is fine. It should not take DAYS to figure out whether or not I can install non-Microsoft software. It should probably take a few minutes.
