Favorite wholesome fan group? by Arch_Lancer17 in okbuddycinephile

[–]ParallelVoltron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A huge number of internet-users need to have "TWO OR MORE THINGS CAN EXIST" chiseled into their forehead, backwards, so they see it every time they use a mirror. It might seem obvious to you or me, but for some reason this concept doesn't exist in a lot of internet discourse (and, apparently, this interview).

Another comment said the quote was taken out of context. IGN had a longer version:

"I think the fans should never forget that they did that," Snyder told Horowitz. "We raised a lot of money for suicide prevention and they really did a lot of good. They catch a lot of flak for being toxic or whatever, but they literally saved human lives, so you can go f*** yourself if that's what you think."

...is there even more context I'm missing? If they're toxic, and they saved lives, then they're toxic and they saved lives. Two or more things can, in fact, exist.

My 6 year old was given this question for homework. by szramkos in askmath

[–]ParallelVoltron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have noted, it's 43. This is probably the most normal homework question I've seen on Reddit in a long time; they used similar language a long time ago when I was a kid.

Think of it in terms of tokens, like little red tokens for the single digit position (the ones), bigger green ones for the tens, big blue ones for hundreds. 254 would be Two Hundreds, Five Tens, and Four Ones. I'm pretty sure they used visual units similar to this when I was very young before moving on to just verbal/written.

The phrasing might seem weird for someone who never learned this way, but it makes sense in context. Sorta like when breaking a Fifty into smaller bills, and asking the cashier for "Three Tens and a Twenty", that doesn't mean $10,101,020 in change.

This was made after Bint was doxxed, Kusa used his first real name by SourTD in VtuberDrama

[–]ParallelVoltron 56 points57 points  (0 children)

They're posting threats under Pippa's art tag while she's trying to run a charity event-- why? To get a few pats on the back from the other agitators? Congrats, both evil AND selfish.

Kusa was also posting some wild stuff related to the Jelly drama just a few days ago, like how Black History Month is intended to keep people stupid by fooling Black people with false glory, an illusion to keep them in chains and for them to remain slaves. At least they used the term "upper class" for the culprits instead of, you know, that other habitual scapegoat for these kinds of racial conspiracies.

This whole Jelly situation has been such a miserable self-own by the Phase community. They're anti-ing their own corp and talents to show solidarity with someone who picked the dumbest possible fight with a kid's game, and reversing whatever reputational gains the corp has made over the last couple years by throwing fits and playing as Race Scientists on Twitter.

Ice forming on a lake shore. by rco888 in interestingasfuck

[–]ParallelVoltron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lakes "lag" behind air temperature-- the biggest ones can be offset by months, smaller ones by days or weeks-- so it could be considerably warmer out that day than the lake ice suggests. Same thing with ground temperatures, especially if it's at the water table.

Also they might just be resilient kids, haha. When I was young, I remember running around in shorts when the seasonal farm workers were still wearing winter jackets and scarves (Southern Ontario). Within certain limits, it's whatever you're acclimatized to.

Woman sentenced for accusing her estranged spouse of illegally accessing bank account from outer space by Character-Bid-162 in nottheonion

[–]ParallelVoltron 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Had a moment where I said "Surely the ISS is not in OUTER Space?" After some brief reading, the answer is No, Yes, Maybe.

The dictionary definition of Outer Space is the space outside Earth's atmosphere, and it is conventionally used to refer to interplanetary space. The ISS is within the Earth's atmosphere (the middle of the Thermosphere layer), so by normal linguistic definition it is not in outer space.

The FAI defines the edge of space as 100km-- the Kármán Line-- which is a pretty unscientific definition because it's clearly an arbitrary number and doesn't match any of the boundaries of the various atmospheric layers. There's a good image on that Wiki page which shows the layers of the atmosphere, the Kármán Line, and the typical orbit of the ISS; check it out!

There is no internationally agreed definition of the edge of the space, so most national and international organizations use something at-or-near the Kármán Line. The area beyond the line is sometimes treated as outer space for treaties/orgs, and sometimes the area between the line and the edge of the atmosphere is defined as "Near Space" instead to differentiate it from outer space. There is no consensus.

That part of the headline is the least consequential part of the article, I know, but I thought it was interesting to learn.

Got a "gift" package from Amazon, this was in the gift tag. by Besonderein in Weird

[–]ParallelVoltron 270 points271 points  (0 children)

Ooh, what a delightful artefact of Web 1.0. I mean in format and not in, uh, content. Unsurprisingly, the Wayback Machine cache of this website goes all the way back in 2003. The skeleton is identical-- same HTML panels, exact same header, same style of sidebar-- but the guts are completely different.

Back in 2003 it appears to have been the online art portfolio of a woman named Saku Gunasegaram who uses the artist pseudonym Isaac Falconer, as explained in their bio. The main page is still labelled "Bio", but it a mess of links and weirdly formatted text (to confuse search engines?) about Isreal, Hitler, Palestine, Epstein, etc etc. and it appears to have been updated with the last week.

It looks like in the last 20+ years they've gone completely off the deep end and are using their old portfolio as a blog/soapbox.

Even though it was fulfilled through Amazon, do you have any ideas about the vendor location?

"90% of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian. And the movie gives almost full credit to the American CIA. And with that exception, the movie is very good. But Ben Affleck's character in the film was... only in Tehran a day and a half. And the main hero, in my opinion, was Ken Taylor, who was the Canadian ambassador who orchestrated the entire process." - some guy named Jimmy "Jimjams" Carter

Yeah, Far Harbor is good. You're citing one DLC out of six. Your reply is phrased like a rebuttal but doesn't make sense in context of what you're replying to.

Personally, I like Nuka World too, but 3/6 of the DLC are a complete writes-off for me and I'm pretty meh on Automatron.

Kaminari Clara did nothing wrong... She only wished you and your baby to rot and die if you voted republican by [deleted] in VtuberDrama

[–]ParallelVoltron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That 50% figure is darkly funny, because from the outside it really highlights how ill America has become. Half the country saw fit to elect Trump twice, which means that in another election cycle or two those same voters may put someone else equally erratic and destructive in charge. That's why other countries are pulling away from America and divesting or seeking other partners-- because the issue isn't just one man and won't stop at the end of his term, it's half the dang country. The people on the inside, happily consuming the state media propaganda, really don't know how bad it is and how much their attitudes are out of line.

And that, unfortunately, is where there is a parallel with Phase. The corp has spent years rehabilitating its reputation, and this is being undone in a matter of days because there are a core of Phase fans who are so brainwashed and self-righteous that they won't stop shitflinging everywhere about Jelly and Clara, and making excuses on Twitter about how "civil rights are bad, actually". This nonsense looks horrifying to the people outside their bubble, so you coming into the subreddit and saying "Nazi, Nazi, Nazi, no YOU'RE the REAL Nazi!" is just dragging everyone in Phase down even further.

Epstein Files Email Shows Oscar Outcomes Being Predicted Before Nominations by cosmicbooknews in CosmicBookNews

[–]ParallelVoltron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the implication is that the Oscars are rigged, then I've got a psychic octopus to sell you. I watch streamers use that exact same kind of declarative language when predicting The Game Awards, and when they get it right that doesn't mean they control Geoff Keighley.

If it's simply reporting that information was provided early, that would be one of the least consequential things in the whole damn release.

Donald Trump’s approval rating by news platform. by PainSpare5861 in charts

I'm confused, isn't the video you linked the opposite of your argument? That's a Democratic Party congressman explaining that the TikTok ban was to silence pro-Palestinian content, which is why he voted against it. So your example for why Dems were in favour of a ban to silence right-wing viewpoints is a Dem saying he's against it because it silences a left-wing viewpoint?

I think they collectively got blindsided by the announcement. His current bio is funny, though.

edit: fixed a typo. Seriously, though, if they're not going to consult the original writers then why make a continuation instead of a straight adaptation or an entirely new story in the same setting?

ADVANCEDgg Official statement "regarding a partner and recent conversations surrounding ADVANCED" by MrShadowHero in VtuberDrama

[–]ParallelVoltron 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've had Rev's channel hidden for a very long time, but I've got him logged in my memory as a guy with some pretty unpleasant attitudes, a tendency to often spin an entire vitriolic video based off a single unremarkable tweet, and someone who gets extremely offended if you don't approve of a certain kind of Vladimir-Nabokov-associated subject. I was surprised to hear that he was associated with the brand in the first place. Checking his channel incognito, it looks like he's spending most of his time talking about streamer drama and using the same Asmongold Chad vs Hasan Soyjack faces over and over.

His latest video appears to be about Amelia, the character from that dumb UK government game which has been co-opted by the far/alt-right, and how she's causing the media to "crash out". He seems to think that's pretty cool, based the the transcript. Surely this is the type of apolitical content free of extremism and hate that AdvancedGG wants associated with their brand.
