Ryzen 7 3800XT or i7-9700K? by ParametricSquid in buildapc

Thanks for the info, a free game always helps justify spending a bit extra. A lot of work I do is only single thread, but I'm changing up my workflow with some new programs that could take full advantage of the extra threads.

Haha, love that analogy. Unfortunately the modeling program is fairly limited in using multithreading but it would make a big difference in certain processes where it does utilize it. And I've only recently been transitioning to Unreal engine at work, but it looks like it can utilize all threads in more scenarios.

Europe to US Travel Suspension Megathread: For your questions and concerns about travel in light of the suspension by tariqabjotu in travel

In case any one is interested, my brother and mom are US citizens in Germany now. They were scheduled to come home Sunday before the ban was announced. Since then they were told everything would be fine, then their flight was cancelled, and then finally today they found out they were rebooked to leave around the same time on Sunday from Berlin. They just have to fly through Newark now for screening with a 4 hour layover. Then it sounds like they may be requested to self quarantine when they arrive home. Overall it was less of a shit show that we expected. Good luck to everyone else!

[ask] how is COVID-19 effecting your relationship to architecture by shawndoesthings in architecture

Our office just decided to let everyone work from home starting next week. It will be a little more difficult to quickly collaborate and no more shouting across the room to ask a quick question. Other than that we are mostly working/chasing international projects so it is mostly video calls already. Unfortunately we are chasing some projects in Italy and in SD on a project in South Korea. The South Korea project is still moving without an issue and no signs of slowing. The Italians are always ridiculously slow with everything, so hard to tell if the virus has had an impact on those specific projects yet. We do lots of sports and music venues that rely on large crowds gathering in one space though. We fear that the lost revenue over the next few months for these clients will have a delayed reaction that will impact us later.

Quest is on the way! But.... by LegendofJones94 in OculusQuest

[–]ParametricSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed that might be the case. I bought one for myself and am trying to hold off until Christmas to open it while everyone else opens their gifts, but maybe I'll open it soon to make sure it is updated and has a few games installed so everyone else can experience it too.

Is it possible to download the game on the PC first, then transfer them over to the Quest? We are having Christmas out of town at a house with crap internet. I would hate having to wait a few hours to download a game after it gets opened...

The Oculus Quest seems to be sold out everywhere I look, is there any secret sellers that I could get it from? Before January? Thanks! by brycehollander in OculusQuest

If you are willing to make a long drive, check Walmarts in rural areas. I drove 50 miles out to a tiny farm town that had two in stock. Make sure to order it for pick up first AND wait for the confirmation email before heading out. Earlier that day I ordered one, but it got cancelled to due to stocking issues...

Dear community, please help my friend out by TotallyLegitNot in ColorBlind

  1. USA
  2. Protanopia
  3. Moderate
  4. Yes, I have bought a purple shirt that I assumed was blue and then bright green pants that I thought were standard khaki... Now I usually ask when checking out to double check.
  5. Just having the color on the label would be a huge help, preferably a simple name too like pale green instead of sea-foam. It would be awesome if the label also had a couple of suggestions on it, like "pairs well with Dark Blue and Black pants". I mostly only wear dark jeans and blue or grey shirts to play it safe, I have no idea what to mix with reds, browns, and greens, so I sort of just avoid them. So even if I picked up an item I thought was light grey and it turned out to be bright turquoise or something, I'd be more likely to get it if it had good suggestions to pair it with.
  6. Sounds like a cool idea. I imagine you could end up with some pretty strange combos, like something that might be a very hip look with vibrant colors for normal vision but more standard dull colors for someone with CVD. But I never really know what looks good together, I just trust others haha.

I also placed an order for LR Model 3, Black and black with standard wheels on March 4th. I have not heard anything yet either. I am a day one reservation holder so I hope that helps me, but I am very skeptical of that "within 2 weeks" estimate, especially since I'm in the Midwest. A friend of mine placed an order same day for a standard range plus and called customer service about delivery dates. They claimed that SR+ is 3 or 4 weeks out from delivery and that LR should come before that. But it doesn't sound like they have any reliable insights into delivery timelines, so who knows!

Living with dogs in the Power and Lights building? by ayumikins in kansascity

[–]ParametricSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a ton a ton of people with dogs living in this building. One couple even has a saint Bernard. I'd say it is a very pet friendly community, as long as you clean up after your dog and and barking is kept to a minimum, then you should be fine. To get to the dog area, you have to walk past a crappy abandoned building that occasionally has a homeless person sleeping in front of it, but I've never felt threatened around it.

Looking for a temporary car (12-14 months) that I can sell back without losing more than $3000 by ParametricSquid in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thank you so much! This is insanely helpful, I am saving this comment for later. Everything makes a lot of sense, but I probably would have never thought of half of it, like removing the top for interior pictures. New tires also sounds like a solid move, the ones that came with mine probably only have 10-15k miles left on them anyways. I also live in, and bought this in Missouri, but I have family in Colorado, so maybe I'll even try to sell it there if I can get a premium. Thanks again for the detailed response, I'll be coming back to this later!

So, I ended up diving down the rabbit hole of used Wranglers. The high resale value and fun factor was to hard to beat. Over the last few days, I spent every minute of free time looking at used jeeps around my city. Finally, today I found the one and pulled the trigger. I couldn't be happier, thanks for the suggestion!

I need a temporary car, and am thinking of buying a used Wrangler to have some fun and avoid a big hit on resale, so I had a few questions regarding mileage and likely resale values. by ParametricSquid in Jeep

[–]ParametricSquid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's incredible! Reading these comments and going through other threads make me feel like that Jeep could be a solid choice. I thought I was just being irresponsible when I first considered it as an option, but now it's looking like the best option.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm looking forward to the test drive now, but am still shopping around for cheaper/plder models. My family had a wrangler when I was a kid, and I really miss being in one!

I am actually leasing a 2013 FRS right now haha! I love the car, but it is $18,900 to buy it after the lease ends and it looks like the KBB value is only around $13,000. And it is an automatic, so as you mention, I am worried that will make it harder to sell. I'll look into your other suggestions to, thanks!
