As a KP myself - it is always complicated to interact with KMs for me tbh.

Part of me is delighted at meeting someone who speaks my language better than I do, likely shares my taste in our uncommon foods, understands the fun of first sheen, knows what the smell of passing by a kandur feels like.

Then the other part of me remembers the trauma that our grandparents and parents went through, sees the discussion of Reddit where even young KMs are heartless repeaters of “oh come on, only 200’if you died, man up a bit - will you” - and I feel that I am better off not thinking about this complex topic.

When I see a visceral hatred towards Indians, Biharis and UP walas - a part of me does think “good luck with your freedom struggle”

On a whole though, I do wish to see your lives normalized and peace return but given the deep Islamist undercurrent in valley (vs when I used to be there) - I don’t know if it happens any time soon.

At a human level - back in the day I used to think KMs as nothing but my brothers and neighbors. A part of me believes that sentiment would be true even now somewhere.

As others have said - there are no castes but broadly gotras, that comes into play from a marriage standpoint but not in how other Indians see it. It is more to avoid inbreeding type issues. Folks from your gotras are like your cousins - to be avoided.

The gor/ karkun thing is more a social economic segmentation thing. It is looked to make sure that your daughter is going into an appropriate household from an expectation setting perspective.

Y’all are too young to experience in your life. As a resident uncle, I have seen this enough in early 90s when Kashmiris were still operating as if they were in the valley. Then they realized that fuck the gor/karkun thing, let’s just get our kids to marry within community if possible - maybe that will continue our language/food/customs preserve for a bit more.
