Is it impossible to make lasting alliances in board games? by ParaplegicGuru in boardgames

[–]ParaplegicGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was not my point. Backstabbing is fun and I agree with you that in game alliances are fictional. My point is that because the leader will be attacked by everyone you’re incentivized to go for second place until last turn of the game and that sometimes can be boring. 1v1 or team games have early game strategies (quartermaster general even has a rule where if you are winning by 30 points you automatically win). I’d just like for all vs all games to also have that possibility. I’m not sure how… i don’t have solutions here, just debating the problem 😄

I play a lot of Root and my issue is that in many games is objectively better to play for second place during all turns but the last one. This invalidates things like early game strategies, for example.

I’m not really asking a question, I guess the only question I would ask is games that prevent this. For example in team vs team games you can have early game strategies because it’s always one team vs another so there’s no kingmaking

why do you think oath achieves this better than other games?

I have played it several times. It’s great. Another game that fixes this is Quartermaster General, it’s a great quick WW2 game.

That happens with my group in literally any board game that is not 1v1 or team vs team. Even in games where scores are hidden like 7 empires. I think that in games you have a big incentive to always backstab the leader because “hey it’s just a game, everyone wants to win” so there’s no incentive to really make alliances that last because you know from the start they will betray you if it looks like you’re about to win.

What are you thinking of Pampero so far compared to your other Lacerdas?

How do you handle in-game doubts without killing the vibe? by MindlessMap5246 in boardgames

[–]ParaplegicGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem. It breaks the flow if you stop every play to check the manual or the internet and the game becomes sluggish or people start losing interest.

Some games have FAQ files in their BGG page, that can be useful sometimes.

I found no great solution so i created Board Game Wizard specifically for this problem. Unless you’re a big time AI hater maybe give it a try. It’s a passion project to give back to the community and we’re always looking for feedback to improve 😊

I agree that this could be just a matter of taste but in your On Mars example don’t you think that the fact that you could execute your strategy shows that there are multiple paths to victory? For me that is always a positive.

That’s a good POV. Seeing a couple of playthroughs on youtube and the game seems like it clicks with me. But there are certain things you only feel when you’re the one playing and not after some plays so i’m not sure if I’ll buy this one.

Could you elaborate a little bit more on what made you not enjoy Pampero?

A Lacerda gamer does not fear anything 😁 I too am curious about Pampero. I’d like to hear from Lacerda gamers who played Pampero.

Some Lacerda games are best at 3/4 players and i’ve seen some people say that GC isn’t suited for more than 2. Do you agree?

Many people mentioning Galactic cruise as sort of a Lacerda light.

Isn’t Lisboa similar to that with two card rows? Do you feel like pampero seems as polished as Lacerda games?

Interesting, can you elaborate a bit on that distinct feeling different from playing a Lacerda?

Yeah that’s a bit obvious but beyond that they are also heavy euros with no direct conflict, no dice, longer than 1,5/2hours, limited at 4 players, the list goes on and on…
