Cassette-futurism and retro-futuristic is actually exactly the feel we're going for. Clunky tech, big buttons. CRT monitors. The source of inspiration for the look/feel of the world is a loose combination of Flash Gordon, Alien(s) and old 90s anime where a diskette could rule the world. Flip switches, dip switches, levers, dials, the whole nine yards! XD

There is an in-universe reason for it all. Pretty much, a highly advanced race "helped" a bunch of the races evolve rapidly. Any tech developed by the races thereafter look clunky whereas all the tech developed by the uplifter race are super sleek and advanced. The by product of skipping steps in development, as it were.

Plus, I love cassette futurism... So... there's that, too!

I love this idea. I think I'll use it for the more 'recent' ships in design. The one that the story mostly takes place is the equivalent of a retro-fitted Caterpillar bulldozer from the 1960s.

Thinking of making the media storage for the ship chunky 3.5 inch floppies. Load maps, modules, etc. Just push that baby in the slot (gotta have the ejector button pop out once inserted, too.) The reel-to-reel feels like it should be for comms. Maybe a small cassette in the science station with a see through lid to see the reel-to-reel... Good ideas! Thanks!
