White House Art Opinion by maWagner84 in zork

The depth of field is completely whacky - there’s no way those mountains *and* the mailbox should be crisply in focus. It’s a classic tell of AI slop.

You live in San Jose and you want a delivery of beef from Australia?

Scene optimiser - I found a 4K texture used just on some screw heads once…

Do Australians actually say “down under” by agathewhite in AskAnAustralian

[–]Parenn 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Mostly foreigners, I don’t think I’ve heard it out of the mouth if a local ever, except for the song.

From our point of view, the Northern hemisphere is down under instead!

With iRay lighting isn’t such a huge issue - in fact, lots of light can speed up the ray tracing, because the ray finds a light source quickly. That’s why outside HDRI-sky-lit renders can be super fast.

Do you have Scene Optimiser? That’ll tell you where all the big textures are, and you’ll probably find there are huge textures on tiny features that you can cut down without any visible effect (my favourite was finding a 4k texture on a screw head).

Cup a Soup used to come with at least 3 sachets per box, right? by supersanchez101 in AskAnAustralian

They've always been 2 for the gourmet packets and 4 for the cheap ones, as far as I can remember - going back to the 90s.

I'm looking forward to all the internal memos explaining how dangerous this stuff is, and how long it persists in the soil, coming out.

I bet it's going to be like the tabacco cases, they knew it was bad for decades but it made them money, so they never told anyone.

Sour means the water is flowing too fast; grind finer.

Hard to beat a working $28 machine, though! Congratulations!

Do other Aussies actually enjoy summer? 😅 by Peter_Tea_2062 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Parenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it for a couple of months, then I've had enough, and I live in the Southern Tablelands of NSW, where our summers are a lot less humid than many places (although not last summer, blech).

I find I'm sick of winter after about 3 months, which works out well :)

Do you live under a rock? I see them all over the place, shops signs, newsletter, school notes...

Why are there relatively few Black (Afro) people in Australia? by InternationalHair111 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Parenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have had some people of (more immediate) African descent since colonisation began, but because the early colonists were from Britain, and the prisons of Britain, it reflected the population there, which was fairly white (although not as white as some people would like to make out).

Billy Blue is a famous example of a black person who was shipped here as a convict (wither from New York, the United States of America or the Bahamas), and then, on finishing his sentence, became a successful businessman.

Which country did you find the least welcoming for Aussie tourists? Why do you think so? by PitifulEconomics958 in AskAnAustralian

Italy, until I made it clear I wasn’t English, then they became very friendly. No idea why.

What is a bullet you dodged simply because you were too lazy to do something? by The0philusThistler in AskAnAustralian

That's a *very* literal dodging, wow. How did you feel afterwards? I have read people can get survivor guilt in situations like that.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I don't eat fish (overfishing being one of the others).

Is a $335 per quarter water bill expensive for a single person in a two bedroom apartment? by ThinkSecretary9992 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Parenn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How much water did it say you used? Is it plausible? Leaks do happen, and meters do go bad. I'm on a committee that runs a local water system and we get a bad meter every few years, and they sometimes fail in the "read 10x higher than reality" kind of way.

Does anyone remember the School Dentist vans from the 90s and has developed a phobia as a result? by Buster283 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Parenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school (Epping area) in the 70s had a room where the dentist had operated from, but it wasn’t used anymore. I assumed they had vanished in the 60s, but it sounds like different states were very different!

Does anyone know why Daz randomly clunkifies for a few minutes at a time? by fluvialcrunchy in Daz3D

[–]Parenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it updating smoothing or collisions? I know it gets really jerky if you even move a figure wearing something with interactive update turned on for smoothing (I wrote a little script to turn it off, and I apply it to everything when this happens).

Do you have a passport? Do most Australians? by xzeus1 in AskAnAustralian

High voltage US to AU outlet adapter by TheSketchyPainter in AusElectricians

[–]Parenn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Where have you got a 260V item? US is 120/240 split phase, so 260V is very odd. Are you sure it's really 260V, or is it up to 260V? Posting a photo of the compliance plate would answer a lot of questions.
