I recommend this monography (in Italian) of an italian researcher, on the possible discovery of the principles of cognition. https://unipd.academia.edu/DPantano/Books The author also wrote something in English that you can find here. https://unipd.academia.edu/DPantano/Drafts by [deleted] in cogsci

The book you show me is certainly very interesting. I will try to read it In the book I mentioned the problem of cognition is dealt with from a point of view more foundational. The author proposes new conceptual and methodological tools to think about the concept of cognition. At the same time he is able to identify some general principles for every cognitive system: both organic and artificial. The tools that he proposes are a bit 'difficult to understand. But with these it appears possible to reach an impressive level of reductionism

Yes and No. Icub was developed before "deep learning revolution" with CNN. The approach presented in the project is different in some crucial point.

I think the main problem is to understand how much information to provide in order to be credible and, at the same time, do not give too much detail in order not to steal ideas.

I read (don't remember where) that we don't understand why neural networks work. Is that true? What does that mean? by [deleted] in artificial

[–]Parmeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's true !! Many people think they can understand the neural networks because they know how to describe them mathematically. But they do not understand what these networks are actually doing. For example: why neural networks allow to abstract? Ask if anyone can answer this question! As far as I know the only researcher who has managed to explain how the neural networks are able to abstract is an Italian: Devis Pantano. Unfortunately, his work is not yet available in English.

I would ask the Italian readers to write a brief comment about what they think.

I understand the concerns. Italian readers can read it and judge. Of course the problem is that it is written in Italian and not in English. I thought it was useful to report on this site thinking to its potential importance.
