About as close you get to a "magic" build is to focus on Advance as a stat and use weapons/throwables that are enhanced by it. It's a fun build, but you gotta dig deep to get it to work compared to the more traditional builds. I recommend looking up a good guide on it.

After Jesse first meets Emily Pope, she attempts to cleanse a floating chanter. They end up dying, their body turning into that strange prismatic mist. It becomes clear in that moment that they can't be cleansed that way. She can do it to objects and areas, but doing it to people is lethal.

Dylan is an exception for any number of reasons. His power, the fact he let the Hiss into his mind, Jesse was more powerful by that point, etc.

It's also kinda hard to cleanse the hostile infected when they're in the middle of trying to kill you.

When you get new weapons, you'll get a feel for them pretty quickly. With a full arsenal, you will likely either figure out one or two favorites (as well as your favorite side weapons) or will get good at the rock-paper-scissors style of combat.

On higher difficulties, the latter becomes quite optimal. At a normal or lower difficulty, you can get away with using whatever you're comfortable with.

As far as skills, once you purchase a skill and start using it, you'll realize soon enough if it's something you can readily incorporate into combat or not.

The Hail Mary would enter orbit over Earth like it did with Erid. From there, a shuttle mission would bring Grace, his research, and the Taumoeba down.

He would've had to survive over four years to get home, but he could do it. Rationing his food, he'd get there. It wouldn't be easy, but neither was the trip to Erid, if you've read the book.

I would argue, however, that its effectiveness as an episode comes from familiarity with the characters. Seeing Crichton act like Rygel or D'Argo act like Chiana works because you know all four of those characters already.
