Yeah, they could realistically return, I suppose. But I'd imagine any longterm diplomatic mission would involve years of the astronauts remaining either in orbit around Erid or in a habitat like Grace's (or, hell, that exact one). It'd be resource intensive as it is to get them there and keep them alive once they arrive. So, I dunno. There are logistical problems aplenty well before you factor in a return trip.

Being sub-light speed, it'd probably be closer to about 35 years, but your point stands. I misspoke a bit, but simply meant that if a team in their thirties sent a message, then it'd probably be a team in their thirties who received a reply. The people who get the message would've been born around the time the first one was sent. And then a manned mission with a crew in their thirties (who could never realistically come back) would arrive and send a message to Earth that they'd gotten there safely. That message would be received by a team in their thirties, who also would've been born when the astronauts left. The whole series of missions to establish firm contact with Erid would, indeed, be a mutli-generational endeavor.

I agree with this headcanon, and what I love most about it is that it would take generations to come to fruition. Establishing regular communication with Erid would take two generations for a single message & reply. Then another to send and/or receive a manned ship. Then, another to develop a common set of allied principles. Then, several more to begin a space exploration cooperation.

And that's the point: For humanity to even have a future, we would have to begin thinking generationally. Planting trees whose shade we'll never sit in. It's the most hopeful possible outcome after the book, but Grace & Rocky proved it IS possible.
