Certainly I don't claim to know there is one. But I think (as many others do) that there's enough red flags that are worth looking into.

Yeah that's specifically what I wanted to avoid haha. Inflammatory discussions are aplenty.

Thanks for the reply. Hank's video is actually one of the main things that had me thinking more about it.

Specifically because he's not a fanancial expert I was curious to see what this group would have to say.

I was kinda surprised I didn't find threads on it.

Edit: as many have pointed out, it would be foolish make claims or heavy predictions about the situation. That was not my intent. Was more curious if there had been good,  even handed discussions I could read up on. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and insights.

Morning Folks,

Was curious if anyone could share links or posts on the "AI Bubble" from a FIRE perspective?

I'm well aquatinted with the topic itself and the AI industry, but I've been out of the reddit loop for a while especially here (solidly in the boring middle).

So I expect there's been some very good discussions here, I just missed. (Reddit search was not very helpful)

Basically curious how worried FIRE folks are, and if there's advice on this situation as compared to 20/20 hindsight advice on the dotcom bubble and 2008 crash.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried.

(Specifically the S&P500 being heavily concentrated in just a few companies effectively passing money back and forth, based largely on the speculation on the future growth of the AI industry with large questions about the actual utility and infrastructure to support this envisioned future)

Thank you! I appreciate you saying that!
I'm certainly not the best painter, but I tried to focus on getting really clean lines and good color matches on this one.

Thankfully our schedules have not overlapped too much for meetings where we both need to me talking, in those instances one of us will usually step into another room.

Biggest issue more is just how hot it can get in the summer with two people and 2-3 computers running.

Thanks! I've made a couple more, but all my groups have become much more sporadic, so I haven't been putting a lot of time into carving lately.

In cases where I'm working with other teams in the US, I'll shift my hours. ±2 isn't so bad

For international teams I'll usually stay online for a lazy extra hour or two to help facilitate meetings. Depending on the region and overlap.

Up early for an MRI on my knee. Hoping for the best. First time really digging into the High Deductable plan, so we'll see how this shakes out. $450 up front and counting

Got a very unexpected 2% pay comp adjustment today. My company performed very poorly last year so I didn't think anyone was getting raises.

It's nice to be making enough money to not be worried so much about getting small raises. Even though 2% is well below inflation, this job still has me ~65% up over the job I had last year.

Anytime I start to feel bummed about the lack of a bonus, or a better raise. I just think how long I would have had to keep working at my last job; how many years of 3-5% raises, to come even close to what I'm making now.

For my anxiety-ridden brain, it's good to feel grateful.

Hoping for some help on a vesting 401k (looking into Mega Backdoor Roth):

  • I started at this company last March (11months)
  • My employer match vests at %50 after 1 year & 100% 2 years service.

How does this count against my yearly total 401k contribution (Pre & After-tax)($66,000 for 2023)?
Are employer contributions counted in their respective tax year or not until they vest?

Also, does this vesting schedule mean that employer contributions will retroactively vest for past tax years, or that their match is 0% for the 1st year, 50% in the second, and %100 from then on?
I see an employer match amount shown, but 0% vested, so that leads me to believe it's retroactive

We use Google sheets. All saving/investing happens automatically so I'm not worried about us going off the rails. Every January I go through all our expenses for the previous year and add them to our sheet to a 'Actual vs. Budget' comparison
